newbie question about limp mode + track days...

I was reading how guys with JB2 / V2 get limp modes 2 laps in during track days..

What is causing the 335i to get into limp mode? Is it because they are not running 96+ gas with the tune?
Also, will the 335i limp on stock ecu?

I plan on running jb2hh + dp and want to know what I need to prevent it
from going into limp mode

The car has various limp mode levels depending on what the car "thinks" is happening. Most of the limp modes associated with track days have to do with overheating. There is a debate however on what parameter is being measured. Some postulate that it is oil temp. I have personally gotten what I consider high oil temps on track. I am an instructor and I go pretty hard..and with ambient air temps of about 80 degrees..I was getting oil temps in the 285 range with a stock program and OEM oil. My car is a 6spd..with the oil cooler from the factory. I am not aware of anything particular to the JuiceBox2 or Vishnu Procede v2 that sets off limp modes when taken on track. I think it has more to do with going on track itself and the oil or water temps that are experienced. If I was running a tuned car..I would add a bit of extra octane in the car to take full advantage of the tune....I do this with my SSTT...and run about 95-96 octane on track now.

Hope this helps. Just watch your temps and let off a bit and cool down the car if you experience oil temps at or above 280.

so you dont encounter limp modes every 2-3 laps like a post i remember seeing,
unfortunately i cant find it right now...

So it'll be fine to track the car, just be cautious and keep an eye out on the oil temps? Have you tried running thicker oil because i know for STi owners,
in the summer when they track they run thicker oil to compensate for the heat...

I have never encountered limp modes on track..or any other time for that matter..(in this car...I have in other cars)

I have run 10-60W BMW Motorsport Oil (for the M cars) in my car..and temps were down a bit. I would only do this in hot weather..NOT cold. When it gets hot here in California again..I will be switching back to the more robust Motorsport oil.

Did you know using a higher viscosity oil will actually increase oil temps?

I talked with the chief BMW tech at my dealership..he was actually my student at the HOD event at Laguna...and he said using the Motorsport Oil was fine in the 335i. Where did you get your information from. I am not doubting it..just curious to read more about it. Thanks.

yeah i thought a higher viscosity oil (1 step thicker) would hold more temp / take longer to heat up in extremely hot weather since the regular oil will become too thin from the high heat?

I've had limps at the track before, and it definitely didn't have anything to do with the temps. There are two main issues with tunes - either the boost is too high for track use and/or you're not running good enough gas. Fixing one of those is sometimes enough but fixing both is your best bet. When I go to the track, I run at least 2psi lower and try to fill up with a mix of gas that gets me to about 96 octane. So far, I've had no problems with this formula.

Knock on wood...my one track experience with my tuned 335i (SSTT) was very positive. Normal operation throughout the day. One user had an issue with Procede v2.0 at the track until he dialed-in his torque settings appropriately. Then his car was fine.

On a warm day, don't increase boost.
