i have the bmw performance exhaust on my 325xi..i was also looking for something that wasnt necessarily crazy loud, but had the best sound to it...i absolutely love the exhaust and had zero regrets..while it may be expensive, you guarantee not to void your warranty, you get a nice looking exhaust tips with it, absolutely amazing sound, never droning, and as always the quality of OEM bmw parts..
The sound from outside the car is amazinggg! and from inside it is noticeable, but not crazy loud and can be drained out by the radio which is nice sometimes..from cold start the idle sound is great, but once it warms up its a little bit too low for me...but thats just me! heres a really cool video someone made of one but on a 330i:

If you want subtle, get a remus powersound muffler. They come with an adjustable resonator that you can turn from fully closed to fully open depending on how much louder you want it to sound. Fully open sounds classy but sporty, not too intrusive but enough to know its on here. Closed its basically as quiet as stock. Quads or single sided they're both a classy and more or less inexpensive compared to most other brands. |

Remus is a solid choice, they are designed to give the car a deeper grunt but not be too obnoxious. You can leave the center resonators for a tamer output or if you prefer, delete the center resonators for a louder setup.
