e90 323 overheat

Hi All,

I have overheat problem for my 06 e90 323. The issue happen intermittent. When i driving with red overheat light on, i stopped my car immediately and open the engine cover. I found that there is some collant running out from top of the expansion tanks (see attachment).

My garage replaced thermostat for me, and i have purchased a expansion tank cap. Hope it helps.

Just would like to get advise from BMW brothers. If the water pump failed, will the collant leak out from the expansion tank cap ???

Thanks a lot.

This is usually a sign of a failing water pump. When the pump fails, pressure builds up in the cooling system. When the pressure exceeds the threshold, coolant is released through the release valve, hence the coolant spillage. You should get the water pump replaced as well.

Check if your fan is not coming on, or is coming on full blast when its running. If its coming on full blast, I would say a definite on the water pump. It's the most common failure anyway, but without faults being read there is no way to tell

I was able to get a brand new discontinued 924 pump, which are now numbered 925.... If you can find a 924 you will save at least 200 bucks on it alone...

Yup my 323i also had the same problem before. Replace waterpump. You are also using the wrong coolant from the picture. It should be the purple stuff from BMW.
