Gloss Black roof vinyl - mixed feelings on install
Good people of e90post,
Just picked up my car from an installer in Walnut Creek, CA and am a bit torn on the job quality. Since this is my first time getting my car wrapped in vinyl I could surely use the input, typical blemishes, etc. (also plan on taking the car over to Weatherford BMW collision center tomorrow for a second opinion). Keep in mind the installer told me that he is not done (needs to finish the area where to roof rack would insert) and instructed me that I need to buy new weather stripping for the front since he messed it up. Also perplexed on the 3m double-sided tape that was used to put the shark fin on (seems to me more raised, bigger gap than it used to be), not to mention all the little air bubbles and what appear to be 'stretch' lines - grayish lines in 3 areas of the roof. Pictures are attached. Thoughts and thanks. Last edited by gryphun; 07-19-2014 at 12:10 AM.. |

I have a wrapped roof and you shouldn't be able to see any blemishes at all if done properly. Yours is only acceptable if you paid a ridiculously cheap price knowing the guy was a beginner.

haven't paid the shop yet, since they want me to come back on Monday to finish the job and also cover my chrome window trim. I was really surprised with the work because the shop did a great job on my tint and their reputation around my area is generally high as they do alot of custom work on Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche, MB, high end stuff.
Shop charge: $360 for roof / antenna |

I would't pay more than 100 for that work on top of them replacing the weather stripping. YOU should not be responsible to pay for HIS fuck up! I'd have laughed in his face if I were you!
also 3M double sided tape holding the shark fin on is a joke. Tell these guys to go home and have them pay for a professional to fix their work. Sorry that happened to you. Don't try to justify any of it... it will never make it right in the back of your head. Best of luck, Justin

A buddy of mine got his roof wrapped for $230 at street image in San Leandro. This job looks like it was done by a 1st timer at home. A shop should only have to see you once to do work. Not multiple visits (because they did mess up).

I think it looks great.........if a 10 year old did the work.
As everyone else said, I wouldn't pay for it and I'd have the shop replace the weather stripping. Would you pay for a new wheel if a shop scuffed yours while changing tires? I would hope not....same thing applies to this terrible job.

That looks completely amateur. On top of it they didn't finish, fucked stuff up, and are asking you to pay for the stuff they damaged?
I would be really disappointed with them. Sorry about all that. The shark fun too is also not done right. It shouldn't have to be raised like that at all. |

EPIC FAIL. sorry man. what are they planning to do with the vinyl being short towards the strip? and wow at that shark fin. they should pay for the damage and i would just ask for a refund and have them take it completely off.

I havent paid the shop yet since they wanted to see me on Monday. I took the car in to Weatherford collision center today and the manager reviewed the work so I could get a second opinion (will keep that between he and I).
Also attached some new photos since the car has sat in the sun all day today. Looks like some areas in the front next to the weatherstripping are receding. Thing that upsets me the most is that I provide for my wife and kids and I make sure everyone is happy and content and the one time I try to do something for myself something like this occurs. BMW manager recommended if I were to redo the top I should cover it with these 3 options: carbon fiber vinyl matt black vinyl paint it gloss black as for the window trim he recommended I buy the shadowline and dont mess with vinyl wrap. |

Sorry to see that. Have them get it redone by someone who knows what they're doing, or have them remove it at no cost, and replace whatever they damaged at their expense. |

+1 360$ for roof wrapped is pretty pricey for a vinyl job and you expect exceptional quality work. Most people I know get 150-200$ vinyl wrap jobs and the quality of work is good.

I would search the forum for correctly vinyled roofs to show the shop manager some pictures and tell him that is what a $360 job looks like and not the crap they had a beginner do by practicing on your car.... Plus i know many people with vinyled chrome trims that have held for 2 years and counting NO PROBLEM and looks great!

To be completely honest with you, I don't see any issues with the WRAP itself. (based on photos). I don't see any ridges or bubbles
It does look like a kindergartner did the edges and shark fin though. Any wrapper I have seen knows to give extra room on the sides for shrinkage. As far as trim goes, definitely wrap it. Not worth the arm and the leg for the actual black trim. If I were you, I would take the car back to the same shop and have them fix all the issues, including replacing your weather stripping. Don't budge until everything is perfect. All in all OP, don't let one amateur give you a bad taste for vinyl work. EDIT: Just realized you said it was $360. Holy cow I hope that includes roof, trim and a steak dinner
