The ECU doesn't see anything out of the ordinary; the Xede intercepts the sensor signals and sends "normal" data to the ECU. The trick is in determining what to tell the ECU in order to have it do what you want it to do.

So no, BMW Assist wouldn't send any incriminating data since the ECU believes everything is a-okay.

(Shiv, correct me if I'm wrong! )

Hi,
Performance Times
That's for customers and magazines to report. But one of our guys (Dustin) put together some in-car acceleration footage that should give you guys a very good idea of actual real-world performance. You can compare it to your own car with a stopwatch and draw your own conclusions. The video was taken on the way to the 24hrs of LeMons endurance race on a flat road with 2 passengers, a trunk full of racing tools and a tank full of 91oct from Valero. So it's safe to say that it represents the lowest common denominator as far as performance goes I'll get these online within later today.

Pricing
Without have final pricing from our exhaust manufacturer, we hope to see the price of the full 380bhp kit to fall just under $3000. This includes Xede with reversible (no wire cutting) harness, aux. boost control solenoid and fully divorced dual 2.5" exhaust (with secondary cat deletes). Our in-house dyno tuning rate is, as always, $250/hr. Each custom map should take no longer than 1 hour. So if you only need a 91oct map, expect 1 hour of tuning. If you need a 91 oct map and a 100oct map, expect up to 2 hours of tuning. Of course, valet maps or fuel economy maps don't require dyno tuning.

If you are not local and cannot get custom tuned, baseline maps will be posted on our website and be free-of-charge. They will be a bit conservative just for safety. But since most out-of-state folks get glorious 93 octane (as opposed to our horrid 91oct california gas), expect performance similar to (or slightly better than) a custom-tuned CA car running 91oct.

As for installation price, I'm guessing the exhaust would take 1.5-2 hours to install. The Xede another 0.5 hour. Our install labor rate is $100/hr.

Availability
Without final quotes from our manufacturer, we don't know when kits will be ready to ship. It may very well be a few months out. We just don't know yet. However, we will likely do a few fully "turn key" in-house installs, using custom-built exhaust systems, within the next couple of weeks. This will include installation and custom dyno tuning. The idea is to tune a few local cars and make sure that they are all running as they should before shipping out-of-state. Price for these local early adopters will be lower by the tune of $400-500 (basically free tuning and installation)

Other Stuff
We're thinking about organizing a little meet here in the Blackhawk auto museum. Perhaps next weekend. We think it would be a nice opportunity to grab some good grub, meet everyone, and kick some tires. We'll have our car there and will be offering test drives/rides to anyone who is interested. Anyone?

I think that just about covers it. If you have any more questions, let me know.

Cheers,
shiv

Shiv,

What's the est. price if you just want the Xede (shipped to another state)? Do you think you'll have reduced "introductory" or "Forum member" pricing for out-of-state customers as well, before the offical Xede release? I take it that just adding the Xede is possible without the whole exhaust system and custom maps kit and that the Xede alone will also add significant power gains w/o all the extras. Thanks.

New ECU Software from BMW?

Shiv,

People have been reporting lower power from the new ECU software that BMW is installing that is supposed to help the cold start issue. Please keep us updated on this since I know you were planning on going and getting the update done.

Thanks!

Back to business.... I just got a PM from a member informing me that there was a software revision to the DME which eliminated the cold start lumpiness that some people (including myself have noticed). I'm going to drop by the dealership tomorrow and see what is going on. If my car needs to get updated, I'll have to hit the dyno again to see what, if any, differences it makes to max power and, if necessary, retune accordingly.

Cheers,
shiv
People are saying this update is reducing their cars power - I sure hope this gets fixed asap.

Why is BMW fixing a cold start lumpiness? I would expect the car to feel "groggy" in the morning when it is cold?

Modern cars don't do this anymore. I was used to this with my e36. The Audi takes a couple more turns to start in subzero temperatures, but once it starts, it runs as normal.

Good work shiv. At this rate, when/if I get the 335, this would be my first purchase.

I did go to the dealership yesterday to pick up some parts and to get my ECU scanned for trouble codes. I did not get any software update but I'm sure that some of the cars I'll be tuning in the next couple of weeks will have it. When I come across one, we can quantify what power losses (if any) occured. But more importantly, we can get the missing performance back easily. Apparantly, all the new cars are being shipped with the software update so its just a matter of time before I stumble upon one. But honestly, I really don't expect this to be a big deal.

As for logged trouble codes, there were none Nearly 4000 miles on the clock now...

Cheers,
Shiv
