Tesco points

Hi, Sorry weird question I recently had a girl in tescos trying to get me to have a tesco credit card First I thought oh why not then said no thx.

Friday I get my annual credit card statement seams I have spent 22,400 this year well from July 2012 to 2013 .

I dont carry a balance and dont balance transfer dont see any benfits for having in what would I receive points wise if I had used a Tesco master card to spend £22,400 I think it would be around 5600 points and some retailers quadruple them around Christmas so what is 22,400 poins worth .

Am I correct from memory she said 1 point for every pound spent and like 4 points for every pound spent in a telcos

I've had one for 10 years and only packed it in recently. Basically it depends what you spend the points on. Lots of the 4x etc offers are nowhere near as generous as they pretend but I reckon 5600 points is about the same as 120 pounds in cash.

You get extra at the petrol station too, we've used the 'free' points every year to buy something boring for the house (microwaves etc), this year I used some to get some ITunes vouchers (£15 of points for £25 or something). Overall it's not too bad, but it scary once you work out how much money you spend at Tesco every year!!

5600 points would be £56 (1 point = 1p in voucher terms).

The special deals (4 x points etc.) can be quite good. My wife bought £215 worth of watches last Christmas for a fiver!

Use them every year. My wife and I have the club card and the credit card. In 2008 I bought a Rolex Watch with my points, last week got a £250 G Shock with my points as well.

Chatting to the guy in Goldsmiths where I used them he was telling me that there is a local guy [Manchester] who has a haulage company. He has the club card and the credit card and buys all his diesel at his local Tesco Garage. Every year at the same time [November] he has enough points to swap them for an 18ct Gold Rolex. [approx £18,500] just for having the Tesco cards.

All I can say is thank you Tesco.

A little bit of realism here. The x4 offer has been reduced to x3 for many item and only applies to full price items. So if a rolex was £4500 you would need £1500 pounds worth of vouchers or 15,000 points. If you only used the credit card you would need to spend £60000. Now of course you could get this quicker by using the credit card in Tesco. Like all points offers it takes a lot of collecting whilst the haulier might be getting a new Rolex if he found his diesel a bit cheaper he might save even more.

In the worse case scenario this guy needs £6500 in club card vouchers if there is a 3 to 1 deal or £4375 if there is a 4 to 1 offer. Worst case scenario he needs 650,000 points. if he were only to use his credit card with 1 point for 4 pounds he would need to spend £2.6 million pounds! Even if he gets better a better deal by shopping at Tesco and using his club card there and we exclude the credit card, with the x4 exchange which is becoming increasingly rare he would need best case scenario £437,500, that's a helluva lot of points to collect.

First thing to say is that we shop at Tesco anyway so might as well collect the points than not. Since realising some of the benefits I now fill up with fuel from there to get more from it (especially since Shell seemed to be getting more stingy with their points).

We use the points mainly for kids days out. Things like Blue Planet/SeaLife Centre's, Alton Towers, Cadbury World, etc. Works well for these things as £10 turns into £30 worth of tickets (or whatever the deal is).

Got tickets for the Eden Project when we're in Cornwall next month already.

Works well but, like I say, we shop there anyway so is quite a good benefit to us.

I shop at Asda and just save £10 each time I shop, more than any points you could ever get!

Thats very specific. Are you buying the exact same thing each time?

It depends what you buy and I wouldn't buy fuel from ASDA.

I've used mysupermarket to do comparisons before. Obviously you can't buy exactly identical stuff due to own brand products. I find Asda always have good deals on things I want to buy and not just junk. Fruit and veg is always well priced

I occasionally go in Tesco and I am always unimpressed with their prices. Even their offers are poor in comparison. With the money saved I can just buy fuel from shell.

For me personally the best reason to shop is Asda is because they don't have one of these silly points schemes!

Oh! not sure on the maths TBH all I know is I had enough to buy a Milgauss. It was in 2008 and £3,300 when it was 4x not 3x as it is now and it did take me 2yrs to save the points.

Still got a nice G Shock last week for nothing though so I'm well happy.

All I remember apart from the haulage guy story was that the Goldsmiths guy did say they were very popular with people.
