Well the problem here is it's almost just as expensive as roveractives on ebay. I wanna pay $200-400 for everything just like the german guy did. For our cars being prewired it costs a hell of a lot to add BT. I see no reason for it to be more than say an alarm.

Also what is the upgraded microphone for $55?

I already have a tomtom go700 that has BT. I don't like it for the BT part. The volume doesn't get loud enough and the people have a hard time hearing me unless I lean towards the tomtom, which is annoying. I don't really use the GPS in my BMW either unless I take a long trip that I might need it. I want the BT for the BMW because it's safer than holding the phone and I don't want to carry the tomtom around just for that.

The most expencive things are the control module and the eject box. I bought them via Ebay for 130Euro.
Additionally you need the BT-Antenna, the microphone and the brackets for control module and eject box. Together 60Euro. I bougth these thing at my local dealer. You can get the part numbers here: http://realoem.com/bmw/
Programming the vehicle costs 114Euro.
Total: 304Euro ~ 235$
Here's the german guy that spent only $235 for everything. I want to spend that much haha.

I am discussing and investigating this with my dealer, too. I am worried about the cost because the Universal charger/hands-free electronic control module (ULF) discussed on page 4 of the PDF looks awfully like the TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT found in realoem. Cost for just this part is $1600. I hope this unit does not have to be replaced...

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...84&fg=10&hl=16

I hope I am wrong. Strange how the part number for the retrofit kit is hard to find.

EDIT: I must have made a mistake. I find replacing the telematics control unit hard to believe because if roverbmw from ebay is selling the entire kit for $1000, then the kit should be able to be purchased for less than this. Maybe $600...

Ok. Now the prt numbers:
BLUETOOTH ANTENNA 84506928461 $25.11
BRACKET FOR TELEMATICS CTRL MODULE/SES 65156927700 $18.53
HANDS FREE TELEPHONE MICROPHONE 84316938762 $74.77
EJECT BOX, MOBILE TELEPHONE 84216946075 $145.08
COVER TELEPHONE 51167118054 $26.78

The only thing you need additionally is the MULF or TCU. I have a MULF. A new TCU is very expencive, but with the MULF you will have german or french voice input.

Sound like a fun dyi. I am very sure you are very happy with the bt. I noticed that you are in germany and you have a 320D. On my US 330i, the 2 screws you are talking about under the rear armrest are T-50 (not sure about europe model). Yes, they are big and the threads on them are very soft. I too destroyed one of my screw (right one on driver side). You just need to get another screw from dealer or just use 1 screw (thus reducing weight ). My car already came with bt already activated so i did not do this but sounds like an awesome dyi and wanted to share some photos for those photo freaks...
Good pics. I'm glad, that I am not the only ... who has destroyed a screw like that. T50 is right. Also for european models. My fault.

Does that mean the MULF only recognizes german and french and nothing else? Or it adds those languages to english and a few others??

I just spoke with my dealer and he thinks they can do it for around $400 installed. He was unsure if the phone harness was necessary on cars that weren't factory equipped so he's checking on that. If that has to be added it would be another $100.

You can only programm the MULF on one language, which is either german french, italian or spanish. No other languages.

If your car is prewired you can check easily in your trunk. Just take the trunk bottom out and look if the wires are there.
400$ with or without MULF and programming? The MULF costs about 500$...
With programming and the parts listed above the price is ok.

The guy at the dealer said $400 installed including all parts to make it work and programming. Another $100 if the phone cradle is absolutely necessary. That was his initial guess. He's looking into it and I'll know more when I go to pick my car up later this afternoon.

Wow, I am excited if this is the price. I guess you do not need to buy/install a MULF?

Well my guy determined that I would definately need a TCU, which is around $600 alone. That's out of the price range I wanted to spend so I'm giving up haha. If someone finds something cheaper please let me know!

My dealer seems to insist that I already have Bluetooth installed and that it just isnt activated.

So as a sanity check:

In the list of installed options "Phone Prep" refers to the pre-wiring right??

^^ interested to find out what this means - technically, you should be able to check for the module in your trunk...

This is normally a $750 option when ordered from the factory. Although then it comes with the SOS button and BMW assist.

Plus, if http://www.bimmernav.com offers the full kit for $700 (plus S&H), I do not think this DIY will break the bank. It looks like all US cars has phone preperation so the retrofit will not be too intrusive.

this is not the same that you order from the factory the factory is a telematic unit it have bluetooth plus the SOS (that is actullay a standalone phone to call bmw and send data) in the US it use the circular network. the telematic unit is more than $2000 the ULF is only bluetooth you can't add SOS to the car after factory only bluetooh

Yes. But you can order the normal bluetooth with the MULF in europe for 800Euro. And thats exactely the same as the retrofit. TCU without Nav is only available in the US.

I was asked if the MULF is really necessary. Yes it is. If you have a module in the location in the trunk this DIY is worthless for you.
Here the numbers for the MULF:
1 CHARGING ELECTRONICS, HANDS-FREE 03/2005 84106965406
2 CHARGING ELECTRONICS, HANDS-FREE 09/2005 84106975173
3 CHARGING ELECTRONICS, HANDS-FREE 12/2005 84106972678
4 CHARGING ELECTRONICS, HANDS-FREE 84109111718
Price:$644.49
MULF 1 won't function in any of your cars like other MULFs with different part numbers.
I have installed MULF number 3 and bought it via Ebay.
There can be problems with installing MULF number 2 in a car which was build after 9/2005.
3 and 4 should function in any E90.

I think retrofitting the TCU is NOT possible. First you have to install the complete SOS system with the button or the system will provide an error message everytime you start the car...
Additionally there is no software update available to get the TCU working. The retrofit software update in the SSS is only for the MULF.

Hmm... I'm definitely going to put this off for the time being. With my luck as soon as I install an expensive option my car will get hit by a meteor.
