Here's how it looks. Notice that one of the lug nuts is not there and the rest are broken.

I'd love to hear some theories as to what could have caused this from some members here. I mean I see one breaking perhaps, but something odd has to happen for all 5 to go snap off like that, wouldn't it? |

The lugs could have been over torqued which would have weakened them. Did you or anyone ever lube the lug bolts or put anti-seize on them? Because you should NEVER do that.
Good to see that this didn't turn out worse though. And I thought my wheels were rubbing badly! jk...

I've seen cars riding around with 3 outta 5 lugs before. not saying its smart or even remotely safe... but i gotta believe 4 would handle the job if it must. Then again if he hasn't had work done to it and hasn't looked at it since 2011, perhaps it has been missing a while and over time it wore em' down to the point where it broke off completely.

Definitely over torqued lugs.
Unless the shop you went to and had an argument with wanted to screw you up. All they would have to do it heat your lugs with a torch and suddenly cool them, making them brittle. And then over torqued. |

Haven't touched the lugs since 09/11, local temperature change? Longest drive in a while, hot hub, cold weather? Could be just one of a kind freak accident? Glad you and the fam are ok.

Glad you are ok. OP
One question Which lug nuts are you referring to ? The first type or the second type ? And what brands are them? OEM ?

Do you really thing this happened? My girlfriend has been riding around on 4 for a while because her hub is stripped out and one of the lug nuts won't secure. If so, I need to get that taken care of ASAP.

ive seen this b4. could have just been loose and the pressure after a while one twisted its way out
since the wheel was loose, but maybe not loose enought o completely come off, it just wobbled along lightly after a while those lugs will lose strenth til it got to that point. when my wheel came off my old car my studs (on jap cars the car has studs/lugnuts rather than bolts) were broken just do the rotational force with the wheel just wobbling on the hub. id still call it loose lugs that overtime gave out |

F##k! That's shocking! I saw this happen to a car once but the wheel came off completely. Always wanted to know how this could happen to someone's car.
I recently put the winter wheels on my car; will need to check em out in the morning. So this can happen if you over tighten the nuts?! |
