Do all shops mark up prices on parts?

I always ask for part price then labor price.. I started to notice all the shops I have used seem to have a decent mark up on the part. Quite a bit too, Id say 20-30 percent more than what I can get the park online. Considering they use wholesale part places too I bet it might even be more than 30%..

Unless these shops are getting taken on the part and I can just get the part cheaper on the net O.o

Everyone need's to make a living. If you supply the shop with parts and the part goes bad the shop will charge you again to replace your parts. Most shops add 20% to cover overhead.

Why not just raise labor costs instead of charge more for the part?

When you bring your own parts most shops will jack up the labor.

why would a shop want to make it easier for you to find a cheaper one?

You don't think the restaurants you eat at mark up the ingredients? Welcome to 'Merica.

Yup, they'll also deny you any type of warranty for any work completed...

I guess OP doesn't eat out often then. Restaurants charge at least 500% over wholesale on beverages.

You can get it cheaper online because alot of places online do not have as much overhead if they are just selling parts. Everyone marks up their parts prices. Some more then others. They need to make money or they wouldnt be in business!

Gas is marked up
Cars are marked up
Groceries are marked up
Your cell phone is marked up etc.

Get the point?

Unless they are asking over msrp I don't think you should consider it marking up, just not giving a discount or as big of a discount as you may find online.

Lol a medium sized pepsi at a movie theater is $4.50 for that price I could buy 2 liters at costco. I am sure shops mark up parts

Put it this way, my firm gets certain items for half of what you see as a best online price, so why wouldn't auto parts be the same? The worst is when they warrant a part for life, but you have to pay labor. They often double the labor since you think you're getting the part for free....
