Newbie to E90/N54s...

G'day fellas,

Just picked up an 09 LCI E90 335 in Bluewater and Oyster.. Love the car, But... Previous owner has put a nasty mild steel 2.5 cat back on it that drones like a Large Angry cat stuffed into bagpipes..

Opinion piece / ideas here..

Should I;
a) persevere, start swapping mufflers, sort this system out (possibly end up with the shits..
b) seek bolt on replacement
c) my preferred, search for stock system from you guys and send this setup for recycling...

Other than this shocker, its stock.. Kinda want to start stock then make ,y own mods.. Like I said this thing is Super droney.. Esp from 1500-2300.. So a shocker on the highway.. Want all drone gone if possible...

Clearly I'm based in ACT... seems a few local e90 blokes too.. G'day to all..

does it have a muffler of any sort?

resonators?

catless DP's/catless midpipes?

what actual setup is it?

you might simply need to add a res or two/change the muffler

if you have absolutely no idea, yea, you may as well start from scratch.

Depends.. If you like a loud-ish ride, then I'd probably go with A; Since it would be cheaper than getting a complete new setup. As above, what's currently there? If it's a straight through system then you may just need a few resonators.

If you want a quiet right with a subtle tone - find a stock exhaust and do the golf-tee mod. You should be able to pick one up fairly cheap.

I'm in a similar situation in that I just swapped out the rear mufflers for an Eisenmann Race setup. While I think it sounds great WOT and down shifting, it too is a bit too loud for my taste at cruising speeds (1800 - 2300rpm). So have to decide whether to revert back to stock, get something else a little more subtle or modify what I've got.

And welcome aboard! I've started to see a few more 335i's getting around Canberra of late..

Hi and welcome – good to see another Canberra 335i on here.

As for your dilemma, it is a difficult one. If money is not a consideration, then the option would be to go for an aftermarket system, given what is on there at the moment is rubbish! But as Gemballa1980 has said there are dangers when you pay big dollars and are not that happy with the results – very expensive to go back or cut your losses. Some systems are less noisy than others but I think all are louder than standard; how much is too much is very subjective. Quite a few on here love the BMW PE exhaust so they will get a good plug for sure.

In the end, I have not been able to decide on an exhaust for my car so I have stuck with the stock system. But with catless downpipes and golf tee mod, it sounds just loud and purposeful enough for me.

From what I can see (yet to get it up n a hoist) its cat back 2.5", has a x-pipe/muffler at the mid point, then four (count them wtf!) resonators, two of them in the long straights after the x-pipe, then another two stuffed in at the first bend rear wards from there... Then there are another pair of mufflers rear of the axle..

Are two of these things I assumed were resonators actually a second set of cats?

And if these rear mufflers are providing Any actual sound reduction I will eat my dog..

I'm after no drone at cruise.. Guess I'm gonna end up with stock-ish set up..

Talked to the young bloke at Powatone in fyshwick and after grumbling that people shouldn't treat these like a rice burner advised I either look for the PE replacement or go back stock... Prob is ill have to source as original owner I assume disposed of it..

Here's the standard system:

top to bottom - twin pipes into two separate cats into centre section with muffler where it then ends with two separate back boxes.

Compare this to what you have ....

Hmmm ok that helps.. NFI what this guy has done... Is there meant to be any initial cats before that front flange?

From what I can see of mine ( remember this is me stuffing myself underneath ) there is nothing fwd of the point approx where those two cats sit.. There is what looks to me like a box muffler about where the stock cats sit, then perhaps they have stuck the cats plus a set of resonators behind that... Then two apparently tiny (half the size of those stockers) after the axle...

I'll go out and see if I can get any pics before it gets too dark..

Brb..

Ok so managed a few short videos but it seems my YouTube skills are shithouse too...

About to appear quite retarded here so here goes..

There are cats forward of centre x muffler, plus the two resonators rear of it.. Think I must have been hallucinating.. Or retarded take ur pick..

The cats on mine look a bit different to yours though..

Too dark to get much in the way of pics right now but if I can get these vids going i'll post..

Heya Ben,

That a pair of rear stockers? Or that central one halfway.. The pair on mine are definitely not with any form of balance pipe anyway.. Not sure if that would contribute to turbulence and or resonance.. But if I'm going to have to fine stock parts I'll hit you up cheers... Ideally if I do that I'll try n get a complete system tho I guess..

Ok.. So they've removed the secondary cats, added an extra muffler and 2 resonators... WTF!

Depending on what you're after, probably best to source a secondhand exhaust system and go from there.

Damn.. Do you know if it was done in Canberra? Go and see the guys at Roadway in Belconnen.. They're my go-to exhaust shop in Canberra.

I'd be interested in how it sounds..

Does it have aftermarket downpipes?

You could always try chuck the standard rear mufflers back on and see how it sounds.. won't cost you much at all.. And if that sounds sh!t, replace the lot..

Is the car stock other than the exhaust??
