Rapid decline of Residual value for the 3 series

The lease of my 323i is ending this December, I was planning to buy it back initially. However, I saw the new 2009 323i residual value is now at $18,148 for 3 years compare to mine at $22,755. I wonder why there's such a big difference although the dealer trade-in estimate from Canadian Blackbook now is almost identical? Does it make sense to back it back anymore? Thanks!

I think they are encouraging you to buy the car instead of leasing one now, therefore they make you pay higher monthly payment and lower the residual. So hope you consider buy/finance the car, at the end they don't get stuck with it.

There was a huge drop in the used car market as the US dollar came closer to CAN, which flooded the CAN market with US cars. Also at the same the economy brought down car prices.

If I were you, unless you love everything about your car, I'd trade in the car and get yourself into a different one ... maybe a CPO one with extra warranty. You might actually end up saving. A 3-year old 323i should be going for less $22,755 right now imo.
