I think that the only real interest in the spare wheel is from people who want to ditch the run-flats. Mobility kit will make a mess of the wheel and tyre. I prefer an acutal spare wheel because a repair kit won't work in all circumstances. Yes I am a bit of a pessimist.

+ 1

I had some Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres on the car, they had very soft sidewalls. I had 1 rupture on the harbour bridge, while they were nice enough to tow me off the bridge I was promptly dropped off on York St in peak hour. Having to wait for a second tow was a bugger so that's what prompted me to get the spare.

There a few around on the Ebay and some at Autobarn/Supercheap. Which one r better?
I have the BMW one. I have never needed to use the goo, but I have used the compressor, and I have to say it works really well, inflates the tyre quickly. I was very surprised that such a small unit could be such a dynamo.

I also like that the mobility kit is small and fits in the hollow under the floor of the boot.

It seems like it makes no significant difference when you change from RFT to conventional tyres.
OK, I thought a BMW service guy was trying one on. When I had mine changed, the BMW service rep argued with me for 10 minutes before agreeing that it could be done...

Honestly though, for anyone thinking about it, do it, it is like taking home a whole new car the change is that dramatic!

I have the BMW kit too. I had a $100 accessory voucher from the dealer from when I purchased the car, so rather than use it to buy 1/4 of a BMW Sauber jacket, I went down to the parts desk and put it towards one of these

I'd still prefer a real spare, but at least its compact, and the compressor should be handy to pump up the bike/footy etc

It was $198.. less the voucher, so I was out of pocket $98. This was at Brisbane BMW. He did knock a bit off the price though, so $209 is probably about right.

Not sure about there being 2 kits.. I only know of the one, but maybe there is.

There's similar aftermarket kits though, which are bound to be cheaper, and the only difference being they don't have the little blue and white badge on the front

My original tyres are nearing the end of their useful life.

I am most concerned with the possibility of being left with an unfixable puncture on a $530 RFT when it is a month old and keen to see how the car runs with conventional tyres. Michelin PS2 the likely choice at this stage.

As the thread suggests, I can get a spare for around $215 and a jack/compressor for $224. Seems that pretty cover is no longer availible according to my dealer.

While ringing around for tyre quotes, I have been told twice that I will have to get BMW to disable my tyre pressure monitoring system while another said it was difficult to fit non RFT's.

Surely not? Apologies if it's been covered before.

BS on both counts. You will need to reset the monitor but that is all.

Spinning wheels in Alexandria do great work, actually use a torque wrench on the nuts and their alignment guy is top notch.

Just an FYI, Michelin PS2's are available in RunFlats, maybe that could be the way to go...
