Customers can be funny at times. One of our customer owned a £100k motor home, which he parked outside his business. He used to get no end of snide comments about charging too much for his work. On the flip side if he'd owned an old shitter, they would say he was no good at his job.

I understand the problem well Andrew. That's why I went down the route I did. I have a brand new Transporter for work (you still get the idiot comments mind) "doing too well", yada, yada, yada. And the M3 for the weekend, that cost pocket money. I'm just not into spending that much on cars anymore. I'd rather spend the money on a fuck of a holiday ever 3 months, gives me more pleasure being with the family.

I would look at the positives, Andrew. You have had a supercar for 6 months and will be moving to another very nice motor.
I was very tempted with the 640d offer when Peter got his but, although totally different league, I decided that the perception of others would tarnish my enjoyment of it so I decided against. I love the new M6 and would love to get into one of those at some point! I have children though....and my mrs doesn't work - both of these factors are cramping my car desires somewhat, lol!

Andrew, use the visitors car park and turn up in a balaclava. It's a sad world for sure when other people care what you drive in a negative way.
If people hassle you just say something like its your farther in laws and he cannot drive at the mo and hence you are running it for him as a favour.

Posted this back in April, so may not have it anymore - but different colour for you...
Just seen gorgeous metallic red M6 at Cooper Chelmsford for 78k just had 5k reduction to that number... 100k car with 20 miles on it.... If you haven't got the expense or space issue re kids, how about defecting to an Audi TTrs for a few months.... |

Spending money
Spending money on your kid's education is seen as generous and caring
Spending money on Diamond encrusted Rolexes and supercars is seen as flash and extravagant. Hell, yesterday on the 1 Series Forum I wrote that my home stereo cost 911 money but edited it because it sounded boastful (it was meant to illustrate that I have a rather good home stereo system). A diamond encrusted Rolex has 1 purpose....to flaunt and communicate wealth. An SLS AMG is probably almost always mistaken for an SLR McClaren which "only top footballers and investment bankers can afford". This is resentment Britain....a country specifically set up to punish the successful and reward losers (where else would you get away with tax rates of >100% on company car benefits). This came about to ensure that a particular political party gets elected and has led to 'respectable dependency', where living on hand-outs is considered by a significant portion of the population as a viable lifestyle. With the recent recession, banking meltdown and large corporation tax scandals, public sentiment now accepts public drunkenness but despises the wealthy and successful, who are society's new bogeymen. Its like the 3rd World hating America. They burn flags but stand in a square and offer 5 green cards and you'd be crushed in the stampede. Bottom line? In Britain, cars like Lombos, Ferraris and the SLS are only for the very rich who can afford to keep them in locked garages, hidden away from prying eyes, driven only on round trips and not left parked anywhere that would attract a crowd of resentful hoodies on their BMXers. |

Thanks for the comments chaps...glad it's not just me going mad! I'll give an update on the M6 later today!

Thanks for this although unbelievably, M6's are considerably cheaper now! Yes, plenty still exist at this price (and considerably more) but they are up against identical cars with similar ages and mileages for much less. Given they're all the same spec, I find it bizarre the price range of M6'svon the AUC site...surely dealers don't think they'll sell the higher priced ones huh? As for the TTRS, that's a totally different type of car and doesn't really appeal. More suitable for the Mrs |

Now, rather than resent it, I for one would love to hear what a 911-budget home sound system sounds like! I'm sure like many things, the cost doesn't always equate to quality (as I have found with many cars, SLS included!) but I'm sure words cannot explain how good it is |

Don't wan't to know any more all I could do was to pick up the parts I had gone for and walk out the door and not look back, otherwise would of been another expensive trip to AUC showroom!! |

I get snide comments about my 335i from colleagues and worry about customers seeing it.
I sell software to the public sector, so need to be a little careful - hence mine is stock looking. I think an M3 would be a step too far in my company, an SLS would cause utter mayhem!

It's certainly a strange phenomenon and one that sadly seems to be only prevalent in the UK. It seems in this country you aren't allowed to enjoy your success without someone getting upset or jealous. Totally the opposite to most of Europe and the US where people are on the whole, positively encouraging.
We seem to have created a culture which rather than encouraging and applauding people to strive for better, seems intent on beating everyone down to the lowest common denominator. Most of the world seems to have given up on Communism but it seems it's very much alive and well, right here in the UK! |

Sorry to hear that you 'having' to change because of external pressures.
I recall the story about problems with the stereo but wasn't actually sure of the outcome other than MB were going to pay for some 3rd party work? I guess most here would be envious in a 'lucky git' type of way but not in snidy, horrible way. I've experienced it when I was young and free and I was also keen to demonstrate a level of success which didn't help (although as I entered my 30's I cared less about proving myself) but you always get some very jealous types. We do love an underdog.....until he becomes successful! Personally I would try to enjoy the experience of shopping round, just trying out loads of cars as part of the process. I fancy an X5 next but will be trying a Q5, Q7, some cheaper alternative from Nissan / Honda, A4, 3 series coupe etc just to enjoy it really and compare and contrast. I went straight from an E46 to an E92 which I have really enjoyed but I do also enjoy the whole 'shopping' experience. Best of luck! (I actually thought you owned your company - didn't realise you had superiors!) |

Unless you are driving a banger you cant get away from it. I mean mine is a 320D but still get it from others. Just because they are unable to save up and work up a ladder to nice set of wheels dont hold it against others.

Even some people I work with are surprised at the car I have, and even at second hand prices they think it is expensive. I have no idea what they spend all their money on. They don't have a lot of possessions so I assume it is just in coffee shops, restaurants and pubs. Not that I don't enjoy those things, but I can have fun without spending tonnes of money on items with very little value every weekend. |
