In the market for a 328d!!!

Hey guys. So recently my wife and I decided that we are going to sell our 04 Estoril Blue X5 4.8is. We want something more economical and with a warranty for the next few years. I love the X5 but I test drove a 328d and I really liked it. It's no 335d but it is no slouch either.

What do you guys think of the 328d?

We are debating on colors. I want Estoril but I hate the wheels that come with the M package. They are hideous, in my opinion. I did find a dealer that is willing to swap the sport line wheels for the M package wheels. I think I might pick the car up by the end of the week.

If I don't get Estoril Blue we will be getting one in Mineral Grey. With either Red or Black interior.

I'm sure you could find a new owner on the boards willing to swap wheels with ya. Doubt you'll have any issues given that the M sport is preferred by most.

I just saw my first 328d yesterday in Milpitas, CA. I had to do a double take on the model number on the back, because I didn't think they were here yet. It still had a new car dealer plate on it, so maybe it was being taken for a test drive.

To answer your question, IMHO, you must have the M-sport option with the F series because it is a big improvement on the body style. The wheels I see on the M-Sport F30 328d look nice to me, but if you don't like them, try asking the dealer to switch them with the e90 335d rims (either the M-sport or the Sport package rims). These rims might also allow you to run larger brakes later on. I like both the sport package (195s) and the M-sport e90 335d rims. I don't know the specifics about Estoril Blue, but blue or gray would be my picks.

True but I would rather avoid the hassle.

The dealer that I am currently negotiating with is willing to do a wheel swap That is awesome! Every other dealer that I have asked to do this has declined. Here are some pictures for comparison. I just don't think the M sport wheels are aggressive at all. They look so plain and boring.

White is M sport. Red is Sportline

You can check out my garage for pics of the e90 335d Sport Package 195 rims, I am sure you can see the M-Sport e90 335d rims on other garages of posters here to compare.

I know what those look like. I have a 2011 335d with M package. And I love the style 195 wheels too. I am talking strictly about the new M sport wheels on the F series 3'er.

What I might end up doing is using my M wheels from my 335d and getting new aftermarket wheels for it.

Ahh, I didn't realize you already had the e90. Anyway, if the dealer is willing to swap wheels, why not just ask him to put the same wheels on your 328d that you already have on your e90? You would have matching wheels on your F30 too, so you would have interchangeability.

I don't like aftermarket wheels on a BMW, unless it is for something like a winter set, it's like putting a v-8 in a model T. And BMW has really nice rims too.

That would be great, but unfortunately it has to be something that they have in stock. So more than likely it has to be wheels that come on a newer 3 series. I really like the sport line wheels. If they don't have any of the older style wheels I'll probably just go with the sport lines.

My only gripe with the 328d is the tiny honda-like single pipe exhaust. BMW should have at least made it dual pipe output like the 328i. A muscular appearance needs a respectable exhaust right?

But it's really a 320d. Hehe.

To the OP: personally I like wheels to match the performance of the vehicle. So although the M-Sport looks better it really doesn't match with the cars specs.

Make sense?

Hey why don't you just upgrade to the 19" m performance wheels they look good with the msport.

Are you getting a wagon or sedan?

Couldn't agree with you more. That should be an easy fix though. Just change the exhaust tip.

Totally. That's why I am looking at other options

I would do that but I want to stick with 18" wheels for a few reasons. 18's ride better. Tires are cheaper. Lastly, they handle better.

I know it's not a huge difference but it's not really worth it to me.

I was thinking about getting a wagon but with the limited number available at the moment I think I will be forced to get a sedan. I made up my mind last night. I want a mineral grey with M package and saddle brown leather. There are zero available at the moment so I might have to order it.

What do you guys think of this combo?

Smart thinking. The crappy SoCal roads are too brutal for 19". Not sure about it affecting handling but definitely improves comfort and your wallet!

Autobahn?! That's a good one.

I believe you 100% good sir. We don't have potholes as big as yours over there. We usually get the budget for 50 feet of road patching once in a while. You gotta come down here and visit our main attraction, the illustrious 405 freeway. Proudly on #8 of this recent Jalopnik article!

I am not arguing the traffic on 405!!! I am actually in LA at least 4 times a year. Maybe I am used to traffic and 405 doesn't really bother me!
