3 Series To Be Built in US?

Hey guys found this at Inside Line. This basically confirms what some of my Plant contacts have been saying for the last 18 months or so.BMW is very seriously considering building a large number of 3 Series at the BMW Plant in South Carolina. There is plenty of room to expand even after the X3 begins production in 2010.The weak US dollar is killing BMW on everything they import from Europe to the US.I'll keep you posted. Thanks! Why does it matter where the car is built? BMW has 23 manufacturing plants in 12 countries.Better double check Porsche...they are building the Boxster and Cayman at the Magna Steyr Plant in Austria....subbed out if you will...same place the lowly X3 and Chrysler 300 are built.Better do a double, double check...the new VW/Audi plant in Tennessee will probably build Porsche's as well. It's a new day in international auto manufacturing. Thanks! Just because they are building the cars here doesn't mean their quality is going to get worse. BMW has very strict qualifications for people working on the assembly line so it's not like it's going to be some random people off the street building cars for them. They are not that dumb.

Easy there. First not everyone around here is American. And second, when you buy a GERMAN car you expect it to be designed and built in GERMANY. It's not about the workforce, it's about paying a load of money so you get a car that was built by the exact same people who created and designed it.

Relax

Nobody fucking cares what makes you sick.. that's your own problem.

As others said, each part of the world has its strength and weaknesses. I believe the auto manufacturing process in Germany is better. There are plenty of other things that are far better here in US than anywhere else, and my desire to drive a German built car in no way contradicts to my love for the country I now reside in.

If they build the 3 series here, they should adjust their prices accordingly. Not only for the 3 but for the X3, 5, 6, & the Z as well.

And, NO, I do not have any faith in American auto workers; my apologies if it makes you sick. I saw that national geographic "Ultimate Factory" series showing how the Z is made - let me tell you I have never seen more bang technology used on a car than in that factory. Its absurd.

I'm sorry but I do not believe that Americans should be building German cars. Not the same quality at all.

Do you recall the part where the factory worker almost missed that improperly torqued engine mounting bolt, then he scrambled quickly to get a torque wrench?

Tell that to all the Toyota owners who get there cars out of Kentucky and still constantly rank as some of the best built most reliable cars in the world.

Its not where the car is built (well maybe in China), it is how it is designed and the equipment used to build them.

GM makes crap because the cars were designed like junk, not because of the workers (sure they may be a bit slower).

Check the X3/Z4 boards those cars are pretty reliable, and definitely not less so then the German built 3 series.

No idea what "more bang technology" is supposed to mean in English but it´s no different than any other BMW factory.

if they do start building the 3 series in america, they should adjust their pricing accordingly, as well as the freight charge.

Eh...not a big deal.

My ML350 was made in Alabama, and it still drives like a Benz. Just as long as they keep the same quality standards

Why? The cars are selling at the prices they are at, the reason to move to the US would be to make more profits, why adjust the price and lose the profits that you are making from doing the move in the first place. That's just simply bad business.

It´s not as if the weak dollar is news but since the euro is now at a six-month low to the dollar (and the pound sterling is at a two-year low) it´s likely that the plant will open when exchange rates make it equivalent if not more expensive to build cars in the U.S.

My reasoning, of course, is Murphy´s law.

Just an add on the ONLY reason I would care if they made them in the US would be no more ED on the 3 series. But I assume the M's will still be made in Germany so I could go that route.

Bang Technology is when a person uses their fist with force to make something work. Such as forcing an A pillar into the frame, instead of proper equipment, as seen on the National Geographic "Ultimate Factories - BMZ Z4".
