OEM Aluminum Window Trim - Clearcoat or No Clearcoat?

I have a 2008 E92 335XI and the OEM aluminum window trim is starting to show signs of wear and heavy water stains. I've read a few posts that recommend using Autosol - Aluminum Polish, and following it up with a polish, then sealant. But most aluminum polish is for un-treated aluminum that isn't clearcoated. If you use this Autosol polish on clear coated aluminum it will remove the clear coat permanently, and then re-polishing on a routine basis to preserve the luster.

My gut says that the window trim IS clear coated and that I should stick with a medium-grit polish. Does anyone have a definitive answer?

Thanks for your help!
