First service, have I been shafted? 335i

Hi Guys

Bought my 335i around a month ago and the breaks light came on last week and so I booked it in to get sorted and thought Id get it serviced too whilst I was there. One day last week the car was mis firing for about 10 mins then when I turned the engine off and back on it seemed fine.

Took it in today and had the following done

Oil Change (£120)
Replaced 6 coils & sparks (£522)
Replaced front break pads (£150)
Replaced rear sensor wire (£30)
Replaced 2 rear continental tyres (£432)

Total: £1248 - Inc VAT

Have I been shafted or does this seem reasonable?

hmm, almost 2k US....sounds about right. Could always try an indi mechanic next time around.

I'd say it sounds about right. Was it a main dealer?
The problem is you've had a lot done in one go whereas for most people those bills get spread out a bit.

Tyres seem a bit expensive and also the coils and spark plugs but certainly not shafted.

You could save yourself lots of cash by DIYing the easier jobs. That's what I'll be doing from now on.

Hope you got a bit knocked off for the worn tyres and front pads when you bought it mate.

do it yourself next time, there are so many DIY here that my 16 yr old brother could work on my car.

No this was just a BMW/Audi/Merc specialist near home. Yeah im pretty novice when It comes to doing my own maintenance but guessing its not to difficult to do most of the stuff ive had done. Think ill start reading up on these DIY's and next time try it myself.

I didn't unfortunately! Only managed to get a 3 month warranty out of it (which is no doubt garbage!)

Anyway sounds like I haven't been completely ripped off and I suppose it is what it is!

Ill have a route around in some DIY guides and have a go myself next time!

Yeah not completely ripped off mate. But deffo could have saved a fair bit.

I order my tyres online to save a bit also. (Although I still have to pay for fitting/balancing)

Did your car throw up fault codes after it was misfiring?

It may have been worth trying just the plugs first and then moving on to replacing individual coils to eliminate the problem rather than just throwing everything at it which is easier and more profitable for a garage to do.

But I understand you just wanted it sorted and I have paid over the odds myself before now.

I don't have one of those code readers so im unsure what code it was giving back. The engine management light came on in yellow and I think the car went into limp mode and anytime I accelerated the car juddered... at first I thought it was the wheels as it felt like one was loose or something (not had a car misfire on me before)... but it was misfiring.

Is it worth me getting a code reader of ebay or somewhere?

Recheck spark plug tightness I've had new ones loosen up before, went to ngk's and haven't looked back

Hi Tom.

Maybe look into getting something to read the codes yourself. Something like BMWhat app and OBD adapter is very user friendly. Then you may able to narrow it down yourself.

Without codes it could potentially be lots of things.

It may benefit from a walnut blast to the intake or the problem could be injector related.
Maybe try something quick and easy like giving the vanos solenoids a clean(DIYs on here). Although I'm not too sure if they relate to misfiring as such.

Also is it misfiring or just a rough/lumpy idle now and then? You will find lots of people end up just living with idle issues providing the car runs well when driving etc.

Yes I think i will, im guessing I can get one off ebay?

It was misfiring up until a few days ago when I got the faulty injector replaced. Its not misfired (yellow engine light & reduced power & shaking etc) however its a bit rough/shakey when idle (even when warm - sometimes worse after a motorway run)

Ive given it a blast around for the past 2 days and no yellow engine light so I think its sorted the real misfire issue.

Is the walnut blast something I can do myself? or is it quite complex and should be left to experts?

Cleaning of the intake valves can be DIY'd but is very time consuming and dirty job although I haven't done it myself. It's easier to get a garage that has the equipment to walnut blast it but its a pretty expensive job.

Yeah I think it has... Im not sure if this is a misfire or just rough idling (or are they the same?) Ive uploaded a video here.

You can hear the pops at 7s ,10s and 18s

when sat in the car - the same time the pop occurs, the car shudders/shakes abit .. is this a misfire?

RE: Injector ... I just had the one replaced. I was advised to replace all 6 but decided to go with the one for now (2k for all 6

)

You paid $580 USD to do plugs/coils.

I can get those parts to my door for $270. That's paying $300 in labor for a job that takes under an hour hood up to hood down. Yikes.

$180 USD for an oil change. Parts are under $50 and doesn't take long to do.

Sounds like you need to get a little grease on your hands and not pay outrageous prices for basic services.

Possibly needed that hole bank changing at the same time and programming in but I'm just throwing ideas out really.

Is none of this covered under your warranty mate?
