US Advanced diesel prices and update
BMW North America is currently holding an online press conference for the debut of the new US spec diesel line-up. So far we’ve learned the following:
Pricing (which we’ve already posted about) is set at $43,900 (not including destination) for the base 335d, $2475 premium over the 335i with Steptronic or $3800 over a manual car. Likewise the X5 xDrive35d will also see the MSRP increase but to $51,200 (not including destination), a $4100 bump. BMW looked at the D models as just one of the many ways Efficient Dynamics will show up in the US. The US Spec engines have quite a few additions to make the engines quieter Suspension and DSC has been tuned for each of the D models. BMW will look at sales of each model and potentially look at bringing other D models to the US market There will be no V8 diesel but the US may see a four cylinder diesel in the future. No manual transmissions because there are no manuals capable of handling the torque (425ft lbs). Manual transmissions aren’t available anywhere. Automatic is the same auto in BMW’s V8s. Diesel fuel has been on par or cheaper than gasoline on and off for years now (despite the current price gap) so BMW isn’t overly concerned about this issue. Supplemental electric ceramic heater to heat cabin when engine is not warm enough Misfueling protection system to prevent gas from being put in the tank. CO2 decreased by over 20% compared to equivalent gas powered car. Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), rather than AdBlue name Hope that helps.... Michael

wow, those are huge bumps/premium. I hope that bump would also include 'd' model specific equipment/features packaging to make it worthwhile (wheels etc).

How come the 33d is the most expensive rwd 3 series, while the X5d is in between the x5 3.0 and the x54.8 ?
Why is the same not true for the 3 series diesel. The x5 will I believe be a success - the 335d will not, too expensive.

The other one that keeps popping up is about the manual; get over it. There is no manual in any market for this engine, it does not exist, and won't. The advances in todays autos as far as efficiency and performance negate any benefit of a manual. I own nothing but manuals and I have even got over it. BMW does not offer a manual that can handle to torque and will not develop one, there is no point especially since this thing can't rev as it is a diesel.

the transmission thing is either bullshit or the transmissions are a piece of shit if they cant handle 425 ft/lb of torque. Chipped 335s are producing up to 450 ft/lb and they seem to be fine so i dunno what the deal is with this.

the 335d is more expensive than a 335i. For this reason I do not believe that the pricing here makes ANY sense, you get to pay more for less (and the fuel economy difference does NOT make up for it in NA). The pricing for the X5d makes more sense (in the middle of the X5 range with performance and fuel economy above taht of the X5 3.0i). One might disagree with me but I still maintain that BMW should have brought over here the 330d engine, not the 335.

Right - especially since GM can make 6-speed trannies for the ZR1 that can handle way more torque than that.

Diesel prices are tax driven. Since most diesel burning vehicles are used for business it is an indirect way of taxing them. If non business diesel use surges it will drive the price down. That of course hoping that our new president has a few more brain cells than the old one... which at this point is given no matter who the new president is I guess. Diesel is a far less refined state of oil than gasoline.

You know it's far less ridiculous than you may think. If you take the price of a 3 series in '80s and then factor in all the inflation the current 3-er should be closer to 70K

I wonder if the 335d qualifies for the federal tax credit? (Jetta TDI is $1,300)
Very high premium over 335i. Dissappointing. MB E-class diesel is $1,000 premium. I wish BMW the best of luck with this model. |

thanks for the info, mapezzul.
The timing is unfortunate. Diesel has stayed much higher relative to gasoline. Where a few months back it was at maybe 10% above premium, now it is ~50% in this part of the country. This completely defeats the miles/$ approach when the fuel economy of the diesel is only 30% > gas. This problem won't go away any time soon if we don't have increased diesel refining capability here in the US. I would love to own one of these (335d), though. I was hoping that BMW diesels would do well over here and that would prompt BMW to send over other offerings (330d touring for me, thanks). If the 335d flops, I can't see them doing that |

They spend too much producing certain items for one car (ZR1) and then have to spread it to other models... BMW rather just not produce something that way; look who is doing better Sure they could build it, but what is the point? To sell an extra 1k cars per year, yeah that makes a ton of sense...
