Ssk install on an xi - too tall?
My dealer installed the ssk on ky 07 328xi and it seems like the throws are LONGER now, and the ssk boot even pops off in 2nd. The pic shows the msport knob/boot, which almost pops off in R. Any thoughts?

That's strange - perhaps they installed it backwards as I believe that's a very common mistake, but even still, I don't think the throws would be longer. I'd bring it back and show them what the problems are and perhaps you can find another with a proper install to compare it with yours. I'm curious, which dealer did you use? I hope it wasn't BMW Peabody. I've always had excellent service with them for the past 6 years...

OEM BMW Performance Short Shift Kit
The BMW Performance Shift Kit puts power directly in driver's hands, creating a more tactile and immediate drive. *Not for xi models. Short shift travel and more precise gear shift Considerably reduces shift travel for a sporty drive Ergonomic design in black alcantara and chrome Reduces shift travel by approximately 25% Delivers a more direct shift feel Allows drivers to maneuver through gears quicker and more fluidly, with increased response |

I've installed a ssk on both my 325xi and my cousin's 328xi. I used the 330i ssk and not the 328 ssk kit, and I believe the 328 ssk actually comes with a longer lever and the shift knob is what makes the height lower. I would recommend using a 330 ssk instead. I still can't believe your dealer gave your car back to you with the shifter that high, it looks terrible.

Yes, the one that is installed is the 328-specific model, PN: 25117542200
I really do think the throws are longer than they were with the stock lever and m-sport knob/boot I already had. What should I do? I bought the kit and brought it to the dealer to install, I didnt buy it from the dealer.

Here's some photos on my XI.
Luis,
You shifter looks higher than mine. Check out the photos of my install of the same shifter. The shifter should be shorter than the stock one and will definitely have shorter throws. With the M shift boot and shifter, it will never pop out. I've had mine for 9 months and it never popped out. I saw the same thing with my buddy's short shift kit when it was installed wrong. When you pull the orginal shifter ball cup out, you twist the cup counter clockwise. BUT, when you reinstall the cup, you actually just push it down, you DO NOT twist it clockwise as you would think. There's a pretty good DIY on it. If the mechanic did install it by twisting it clockwise then it will sit high like that and it will eventually pop out. My buddy's did and he had a hard time driving home. I fixed it with my old ball cup since his was shot. Let me know if you have any other questions but yours looks higher than mine. It's not as short as some I saw in other posts but it is shorter than stock. Short shifter means that the throws are shorter so you can shift between gears faster. Hope this helps. Derrick |
