New Diesels In The USA
BMW just put up the specs for the 535d and the 328d in the USA.
The 535d will come rwd and xdrive. rated on the highway at 38mpg and 37mpg. It will 0-60 in sub 6 second range. It is rated at 255 horses and 415 ftlbs of torque. I believe it uses an updated version of the 330d/530d motor not the same as the M57 motor we have in our 335d's. It will start at 56 grand and with options it can go up to 70 or more. THe 328d will also come rwd and xdrive. Rated on the highway at 45mpg and 43mpg. They haven't released city mileage but I'd imagine 25 or so for the 535d and low 30's for the 328d and we all know that these numbers will be obtainable easily. Impressive! |

The engine code for the new 6 cylinder diesel is N57. The 535d is sold as the 530d overseas. TBH I'm not that impressed. Imagine what our numbers would look like if our engine was mated to an 8 speed auto and had electric steering.

yeah...the days of transmission swaps are over. Too many headaches to deal with the software and coding. I'd bet my morning coffee that the 8 speed box would bolt right up to our car. But the software is another freagin nightmare all of its own.

Screw the ZF 8-speed. Just give me a 335d version of the Alpina flash. Someone please!

On that note, it does annoy me that 6th gear isnt a little bit longer to get the revs down while cruising, seems unnecessarily high for a diesel and its not like 6th needs to be any sort of a performance gear |

Hooper, agreed. 6th is a bit high. ~1900 rpm at 75 mph with the loads of torque we have is not ideal. We could easily pull along at 1500 rpm for highway cruising at 75 or 80 mph.
Must be because our trans box was not a specially designed diesel box, didn't it come from the V8 X5? |

The new cars with the 8 speed ZF auto also have other fuel saving technologies that BMW has built in, but we don't have a listing. Its likely to be the special generator that charges the battery during deceleration, the electric steering, perhaps a variable oil pump, that sort of stuff.

I like 6th actually. Max torque is ~1750-2500 so it works for me. |

the biggest contributor to highway mileage is actually the drag coefficient. Our e90's are at .29 where as the f30 and f10 are .26
HUGE difference. If ours cars had a .26 we would be rated at 40mpg easily. |

If we bring our final drive down to 2.30 or so, we'll be cruising at 1700rpm @ 80mph. I don't know how much that will slow down acceleration though, I wouldn't think too much since most of us run a tune. Our mechanical top speed will raise from 192mph to 237mph as well, lol. How much HP we'll need to reach that is another story.

If the FD was dropped even lower, it may be possible to program in regular use of 1st gear again to get back acceleration.

According to ZF, my wife's 4.8L v8 X5 and our diesel use the same tranny (diff. TC) and different FD.

I thought it was pretty clever, but it would have been better if they would have made a video out of it, it was pretty slow.

It's essentially a speeded-up video, but done with stills that take forever to download (kind of .gif - like.) Why not just a real youtube video?

Wow. After adding a few options the 535d sedan took me to $80,000 before taxes. I'd be looking at over $90,000 after taxes.
