I've had this BMW for a year and two months now, going on 13,000 miles. The oil change light has not yet come on and the "due for oil change mileage" is all over the place. I'd really like to get the oil changed soon because it irks me this oil is over a year old.

When did you guys get you first oil change by the dealer based on the car telling you to?

15K miles is the scheduled interval.

I'm a premaintenance junkie.
I go the first 2K change it and then maybe 6-7K if I did 12K miles a year..
Let BMW do every other oil change and filter.
I only do 5-6K a year so a BMW yearly change works for me.

Do it yourself at 2k then every 5k-6k miles. At 15k go to the dealer for your free oil change.

That's dirt cheap. Come on it costs about $40 to fill up a the tank, you can't spend $60 on a filter and some oil?

Not saying it's not. Just wondering if anyone had seen it for less. I have no problem paying $62 dollars for an oil change kit, but savings does add up and the more money I save, the more money I have to spend in other areas.

Good point but most places sell the kit for around $70 so you're getting a good deal here.

Mine wasn't until 17k. If you don't drive hard, it resets the goal and gives you more time on your oil. When you first startup, there should be a screen telling you miles until service or date and it'll alert whenever the first goal is met.

Since you're at a year, shouldn't the car tell you it's time? I thought it was ~15k miles or a year, whichever came first. You might call your dealer and see if they'll go ahead and do it based on time.

just get the filters from BMW and use Mobil1 or castrol. Thats what I do.

And no offense, but anyone that lets the oil in a turbocharged car go longer than 5K (synthetic) without a change is a foolish, and asking for trouble. I dont give a shit what BMW says.

Lease or not, (mine is a lease) take car of your car. So what if you pay 50 bucks for some oil and a filter.

I work on engines that are larger than most people's houses for a living, and most of them are turbo charged. Matter of fact, every engine in my plant is turbocharged and on synthetic.

You are already eligible for your first oil change after 1 year. Schedule an appointment for the ANNUAL LOW MILEAGE OIL CHANGE.

They will do nothing but the oil change. They won't even reset the computer. So, when your CBS indicator indicates that your are due for an oil change at a certain mileage, take it back in and they will change the oil again and reset the computer.

I believe you can get yearly oil change if you're not due yet. Call your SA and ask about that.

The low mileage oil change is covered in at least three different ways in BMW SIBs. No BMW center should insist on any mileage limit under the "ANNUAL" coverage.

Starting with the introduction of the 1999 3 Series (E46), BMW introduced an extended oil change interval of approximately 15,000 miles depending on engine operating conditions.

The engine oil change interval of approximately 15,000 miles has been carried over to all 2001 BMW models. However, engine oil should be changed at least once a year. This revision (annual oil change) is retroactive to earlier model years and is included in the BMW Maintenance Plan.

To coincide with the increased oil change interval, BMW also introduced "BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil" SAE 5W-30.

I got an oil change from BMW yearly on their dime.

wowsers, so you've had your car for more than a year and it never occurred to you to do an oil change ever before that? Hopefully no one takes offense to my statement, but it seems like some people just buy their BMW's thinking that the only thing they need to do is fill it up with gas. For all my cars, I've done oil change every 5k miles, and all my cars run past 200k miles with absolutely no engine problem, which saved me a lot more money in the end.

There's going to be a lot of lemons on the road in a few years.

Point and case - turbocharged cars running 15k+ miles on an oil change...

I would NEVER buy a used 335i without seening 5k oil intervals documented and proveable.

My 330i only had 12k miles on it and the oil was changed 4 times.... That is proper maintenance. Not this 15K miles BS

5k or once a year. No less. Ever.

That's why i would never buy a used BMW.Chances are it's a lease.

Why? becasue its a lease? This means you should care for your vehicle differently?



Maybe I spent too much damn time in Germany, but lease or buy, take care of it.

So what? get your hands dirty and change the damn oil. stop beaing cheap and lazy just becasue its a lease.... This is the problem with how we take care of things in this country... So wasteful... So complacent.

I'd bet 90% of people who lease treat their cars like a Hertz rental.
When I lease and go strickly by the book on everything.Many people do worse than that.
I will not buy a lease or loaner vehicle,CPO or not.

No vehicle of mine gets 15K oil changes.
When I own,I cut the maintenance time and miles in half.

You guys are both correct. Borsig, you're absolutely correct that people should take good care of the cars even though it's a lease, and I agree with you. I would do the same if I leased.

However, like Joeb is saying, most people (90%+) treat the leased cars like crap, and there's nothing we can do about it other than stay away from those pre-owned leased cars (which is probably 95% of all the 335i's in the used market today).
