Considering a 2011 335i

I'm considering a demo 335i sedan with low miles. I have been actively seeking a 2011 instead of a 2010 because I am assuming with the n55 the HPFP issues are not very common and there is no "waste gate rattle" or turbo issues. I also definitely like the navigation screen upgrade that occurred in 2011! Is my logic right though on the turbo issues and HPFP?

How reliable has the n55 engine in general been?

It's also going to be an automatic. I've drive a 2011 335xi AT and liked it a lot. How reliable is the 6AT?

Any other issues I should be aware of on a 2011 335i AT sedan?

I also test drove a 2010 S4 and whoa....love that car but its a little pricer and I'm not interested in a 1st year run for any car. 2011 S4s are not too common in the marketplace now, and they are pushing upper $40's. also, back seat room was better in the 335i and yes....steering feel was better too in the bimmer. I think the 335i is the right car for me.

Would really appreciate advice/things I should be aware of with any 2011 335i sedan (auto, premium, cold weather package, nav, sport pkg)

Thanks!

I came to the same conclusion on the 2011 s4 v. 2011 335i.

I am very happy with my 2011 335!!!! No issues or concerns, not to mention the warrantee. Good luck.

You have my favorite color! Space gray is killer.

One of the cars I'm looking at is silver which is nice but its no SG!

My 2011 took a HPFP in the first 5,000 miles so . Looks like it might still be an issue to some extent. Nice car though...

I have seen of a few 2011s from searching this forum and another but it does seem pretty rare compared to the n54. Then again, there are a whole bunch more n54 335i's on the road than n55 335's!

How many miles on your 2011 now? Any other issues?

My understanding, after a year on these forums, is that 07's have the most issues. BMW extended the warranty for the HPFP issues though so I wouldn't let fear of having the problem stop you from buying one. I think they replace it up to 120k miles or something now.

Personally, I intentionally selected a model year that had an N54 over an N55 because I like this engine more.

My buddy's 08 335xi is on its third HPFP. My client's 535xi is on its 3rd as well. I'm also concerned about the turbo waste gate issue that has been documented on this forum. They sure do drive and look great though!

I'm a little gun shy on the n54!

You get what you pay for. I agree about the steering feel but thats as far as I go. The S4 was more $ than my 335 (discounted it about $8,000) so I took it...big error. My 335 e92 has been brutal. Can't depend on it. In the last 4000 kms ive had radio replaced, hvac fan, replaced , 3 injectors and plugs replaced, steering hoses replaced, steering pump replaced, steering rack replaced and 3 more injectors and plugs replaced along with various bulbs etc. HPFP has been done and suspension is starting to creak. Great fun to drive but as soon as I get get rid of this and go back to Audi the better.

Yikes! But I see you have a 2009.

The s4 is not without its flaws from what I've researched. The 2010s had more issues though than the 2011-12s. Many people intermittently complain about how the STronic auto trans acts a little funky sometimes but I can't say I've read about a trans failure or any major engine issues with the 2011+ s4s. So, mane your right!

If there were more of a selection available, I'd probably be more inclined to seriously consider the s4. It was definitely a "special" car compared to the 335i, but its also more money so there you go.

N55s started in 2010 and I-drive was upgraded in 2009. If you're pushing your budget for an '11, its still gonna be worth considering a '10 model. Also, BE SURE to get sport package with your xi. Best thing you can do for yourself...

Navigation was changed in '09, not '11. '11 only got special iPod capabilities.

My 2011 N55 that I had for a year and 3 months only went into the shop 2 times.... Once for oil/software update, and oil again...

When I traded it in, it had 17k miles and 15k of them were tuned.

I wasnt too fond of the s-tronic buts its WAY quicker than steptronic. Trouble here is that 09 335 was a 5 year old car and S4 was new. If BMW fixes the x drive (lower sport susp etc) on new 335 then it will be better than S4....until next S4 etc etc. Ive had 5 Audis and never had a serious or recurring problem . Every manuf has issues but this is the first car that has given me this much grief. I can;t wait to get a new S4.

Are you sure the 2010 models sold in the US had the n55? Really thought 2011 was the first year for the 335i to get the n55.

I'm not looking for an xi-specifically looking for a rwd 335i. It is mandatory though that it has the sports package! Definitely worthwhile.

Please compare/contrast the 2011 to your current 335i. Love to hear specifically about the start stop feature.

I've had a loaner for a week with the start/stop feature. Once you get used to it and think about it its pretty neat and probably saves a ton of fuel. A little unnerving when trying to turn left QUICKLY while you r engine isnt running. I can't imagine that your starter will last very long as its being used about 30 times more per day. System can be turned off.

Gotcha. I came from Audi due to unfortunate circumstances (08 and '12 A4 2.0T quattro), but haven't been able to experience an S4 just yet. Between those and the 335i - the 335i takes the cake any day despite its initial lack in the cosmetic department compared to the Audis. It grows on you after a while though. As for the N54, it is a very tunable engine if you decide to go that route in the long run compared to the N55. I love mine to death.

OP you can check out this thread on the N55 section. It should tell you about the experience of those who own an N55 upon mileage, mods, issues, etc.
