Can you mix and match?

When the got serviced by BMW, they put Castrol in but I wanted to use Mobil 1 (or try to).

So they have two 10W60 oils, one especially formulated for the S54.
Same here - two E46s in the past. One of which went through the bearing/con-rod replacement surgery and both still used Mobil 1.

The problem related to contamination during assembly in the lubrication system and oil pump tolerances for vehicles built Oct 2001 > Feb 2002. Not quite sure what Castrol had to do with it, given the vehicles were using Mobil 1 at the time of the incident. Surely Mobil/Exxon would have been involved in the investigation, if BMW engineers felt their expertise was required...?

As mentioned in another post, it's marketing and BMW doing a deal with a supplier. Which BMW owners mostly put in Castrol because "it's recommended", regardless of the specification required and other oils meeting that spec? If they "recommended" another manufacturer, most BMW owners would use that instead.

fair play, but the titan stuff says 'race' on it so it must be better!

I had my 335i serviced about 2 months ago at a main dealer. I asked the mechanic what oil they used as I wanted to provide my own oil and was told that they only used Mobil 1 0W-30 ESP for the N54 now as that was the new recommendation from BMW HQ.

Unfortunately that oil seems very hard to come by in this country as most of the usual suspects don't seem to stock it. Eventually managed to get 8 litres of the stuff off an ebay store for a great price.

Garage List
You'll be OK with Mobil 0W-40 New Life as an alternative to ESP.
