Do you think damage will occur over time? I'm surprised more people aren't discussing this. Hardly anyone has commented on it.

I don't think there would be immediate damage, but if the servo is moving a lot to try to engage the front wheels, it (the infamous 60k mile plastic gear you can read about on the X3/X5 & xDrive forums) may wear faster. On the other hand, the servo may work less with the front wheels disconnected. The only way to find out is to read those signals going to the servo over a period of time.

Yeah j would think less stress on the front end. Is the rear/main drive shaft identical to the RWD 335?

Subscribed. Personally, I'd prefer to have it able to be selected like a 4×4 instead of always-on... To be straight up, I bought my E90 because it had the features I wanted (Nav+HID) at the lowest price on the lot, and I didn't really know the subtle yet major differences between the RWD and AWD until I bought this car, especially since I've mostly owned FWD cars.

... But more so for gas mileage's sake (and maybe for some aspects of performance), I'd like to have it on RWD in sunny SoCal, then perhaps AWD when I feel like tearing through the hills, the rare chances we have inclement weather or even when I finally can try snowboarding in the winter.

Forgive my ignorance, but doesn't that leave the gutwork exposed to the elements? How easy is it to reassemble if one were to want it back (e.g. before encountering inclement weather or trading up)?

i hit 1000km yesterday and still no issues. and there is a plastic covering that covers the front drive shaft area so it wont be exposed to any elements . it will be just as easy putting it back in. 8 bolts and about 20 minutes. im gonna throw it back on for the winter. As for driving so far its been great. i get full rwd . and i read that if the front drive shaft has no load then the power is transfered to the rear . i spin tires all day and get it sideways if i want. worth a try. if you dont like it just put it back on . theres not really any gutwork to be exposed anyway

Oh, that's a piece of cake. For some reason I thought everyone was talking about the shaft from the differential to the wheel.

I ran my 330xi without the shaft for a drive to get a new one - on the highway at speed, with no issue.

I did disable the DTC/DCS just in case.

Wait . Was it hot or was it cool?

Saw the thread you started: how difficult was it?

It is a 3 on a scale of 1-10. Really easy if you know where it is, have a jack and some stands and a set of sockets.

1. Get front end of car in the air on jacks.

2. Crawl under and remove the mid section plastic under body tray.

3. Using 3/8 10mm female torx socket and extension with wobble elbow...remove 3 out of 4 bolts from the rear shaft mount. Then move to the front and remove them all.

** you have to get your front wheels fixed/braked if you don't have an impact....otherwise the wheels will spin along with the shaft. I used ramps and a jack on each side to get some more room under the car. I also used my Milwaukee M18 Fuel Impact (highly recommend!!).

4. Slide a jacks stand under the car to support the shaft as you get to the final bolts.

5. Pull shaft out....replace under body tray for.

6. Go for s drive. Its fun.
