DME failure :(

This weekend I was at Atlanta Motorsports Park for a track day. Car ran beautifully in the morning session. In the afternoon session I started getting frequent fail safe modes. Around 4 or so I decided to just pack it up and head back to my boss's dad's home.

Followed my boss back. About a mile from the house I punched it into the boost and at about 5K misfired like all hell. CEL continued to flash at me and the car felt like it was on 3 cylinders and I limped it into the driveway where it stalled out.

This has happened before so I just turned car off, took key out. And then restarted the car and all clears. Welp, not this time. I didn't have the laptop or cable with me. So I just read the faults through the JB4 and looked up what all the numbers on the speedo meant.

Came back 30BA fault which is injection misfire 1,2,3: DME diode failure. Lovely. Tried clearing it out through the JB4, nothing.

Last night I was too exhausted to research some. And I was at the track today as well. My car now sits in a garage 3 and half hours away from where I live with the DME removed. On the ride back I decided to research. Technically under federal law its covered 8yrs/80K, but everybody that has had the issue seems to be getting reamed by the dealers for it.

Luckily I do work for a European shop so we may try a diode repair on the DME itself. I completely forgot to check the fuses in the DME compartment to see if one was blown and may have triggered the fault. That is the task for next weekend when I make it back down there. Praying its just a blown fuse. If not will try diode repair and if that doesn't fix it a call into Autologic will be made into coding a used DME to the car.

I am well aware there is a TSB for 6/07-8/07 build dates. My car though is a 11/06 build date. Ugh. I understand computer components can fail just like anything else. But diodes don't seem to take a dump in Japanese cars unless it got water on it somehow... Oh well I love my BMW.

Oh Man, I have an 11/06 build with too many mods to de-mod. Let me know what you find out in regards to repairing or getting a new DME. Crossing my fingers in hopes my DME does not implode.

Definitely let us know what the outcome is....us older 335 owners (2006 & 7) need options when stuff starts breaking.

My car is at the dealer for the same reason. Error code 30bb
Dealer wanted me to pay for the DME but I told them I knew it was under warranty for 80k miles.
Then they wanted me to pay for 3 injector which according to them were bad before they change the DME. lol
At the end, they are going to replace all 6 injector and if the injectors are not the issue (which is not) the they will replace the DME and I will not pay a dime. They are taking for ever, 11 days at the dealer already.

Build date 8/2006 I think :-)

Question, where you running on G4 board or a G5 and ISO?

Good for you! I like it when I see an owner stand up to this kind of dealership BS.

Hopeully you will see a difference with 6 new injectors.

AFAIK, Autologic does not support coding/programming of a used DME into a different car - already tried that with other cars. The CAS, DME, and keys need to be swapped completely, but I don't know whether that causes any other VIN problems, which I suspect it would when reading info off the DME and CAS.

Diode repair would be an easy thing to do with the info that Roy Cormier posted here. You could also send the DME to Auto Truck Electronics in TN: http://www.autoecu.com/ We've used them for repair of many different modules in BMWs, and the shop up the street uses them for all sorts of older repairs on speedos, clusters, etc for other makes.

Same thing happened to me..open the dme and check the injector MOSFETs with a multimeter. All you have to do is carefully solder in new ones for the blown ones. In my case two were blown and it also took one coil pack out. You can order the MOSFETs from digikey.com for less than $1 each.

Service consultant just called me. They replaced the 6 injectors and finally realized it is a bad DME.

6 new injectors for free

Now wait for the DME to arrive.

Maybe you can offer a service to perform this for someone...I would gladly pay you for your services if this issue ever happened to me...What do you think?

2nd...I would gladly pay a more than fair amount of money to compensate you for your time.

I might actually buy a few diodes to have in my repair box. I am sure if they fail and I can identify the failing MOSFET with my multimeter, I can get any local electronics repair shop to solder in a new one, that could be the ticket for many of us.

I'll know more this coming weekend when I make it back down to ATL and check the fuses. If not next step will be to repair the DME.

JamesM3M5, I'm sure Autologic will tell me no. We tried on a 745 and they told us no, but hinted that it was possible or they could do it just wasn't allowed to for whatever reason.

But I'll try repairing it myself if thats what it comes down too. Thanks for the links guys. Bimmer305, I'm running on the G4 board.

^ that's awesome! it sounds like you have a good dealer. How many of your mods were on at the time they did this work?

Better safe than sorry.

They only thing I was worried about, was on my gas tank it was full of 50/50 ethanol mix.

Soldering on a diode is no more difficult than modding a JB4 board for whatever reason. If theres interest maybe ill start a service for that like onebadmofo does for coding.
