Unhappy White Smoke from Exhaust

Hey Guys,

I just installed my VRSF downpipes yesterday, and i am noticing puffs of white smoke coming out from my exhaust. It is most definitely not condensation, as the smoke lingers in my garage.

When installing my downpipes, i noticed that my rear downpipe O2 sensor was covered in white powder, and so were the inside of the rear downpipe. With the downpipes on, i never noticed any smoke from the rear of my car, but now that it is completely catless, the smoke comes out in thick puffs!

I did some research here, and thought it might be a coolant leak. I just checked my coolant level, and although it is not at min, it is far from max. Can anyone here advice what i should do?

Currently the car only has BMS JB4 Stage 3 tune + DCI Intakes + VRSF Downpipes. The car drives great, and never has there been a rough idle or anything along those lines.

BTW car has an N54 engine (sold the one in my signature).

Help!
Thanks!

Seems like everyone is running into the same thing. I installed mine and saw small amounts of white smoke and smelled burnt oil. It looks like turbo seals to me as well... but who knows.

What's the benefit of G5 over JB4?

Hey guys,

As many know we've been developing a special version of the JB4 board especially for cars with large turbo(s) or those running methanol injection at higher and more aggressive boost levels. And the time has come to make a general post about it that I can refer people too for additional info.

The normal JB4 board is called the G4. The G5 has everything the G4 has in addition to:

1) A revised boost control system allowing both isolated or integrated control with no hardware PWM/duty cycle limits, etc. PWM limiting is all software/firmware based.
2) Built in crank position offset (CPS) and speed limit defeat (SLD) through additional wires that can be connected to the DB9 connector w/ the BMS USB cable.
3) An extra high current output that can be used to power a 2STEP relay, nitrous relay, etc.
4) 1.8k O2 biasing resistors instead of 2.7k biasing resistors allowing a wider range of AFR adjustment.
5) Some additional analog and digital I/O for future expansion.

Basically, the idea with the G5 is to address the evolving tuning needs of our higher horsepower customers. The G5 uses unique firmware and will evolve separately from G4 firmware. Although, as a general rule, new features will be ported to both versions simultaneously.
From Terry

Really everything about it makes it a great tune.

Better boost control, control of ignition, and more fueling. Everything a growing N54 needs to make good safe power

I wondered why the new board wasn't just called JB5. Makes sense now.

It's kind of like Iphone 4 and 4s.

Perhaps it wasn't enough change to make it it's own Iphone 5

So you guys were right, my turbo seals were gone. No to strip the car back to factory specs, and send it in for "hopefully BMW covered" new tubros!

I recently had white smoke issue and coolant was low every few months....... I had a bad oil filter housing gasket, dealer said coolant pressure kept dropping due to above. I was hoping for new turbos but they're still running strong.
Everything on my car that could be fixed has but the turbos and hpfp....... 66k so far, they even fixed a leaky muffler bearing and they used a metric crescent wrench to fix it.
Check ur coolant pressure

so what happened? did bmw replace the bad turbo? did you put your vrsf downpipes back on?
I have the EXACT same problem than u did right now. I just installed the vrsf dps and it started smoking. I have bms dci and jb4 G4. The smoking is really bad, and stinks.
