You can absolutely run staggered wheels on an xi, BMW offers this as an option on xi models from the factory. You just want to make sure the difference in rolling diameter between the front and rear wheels is less than 1%

Coming from Audi's, running staggered on our cars was considered a big no-no. For some reason, everyone I talked to at my local BMW dealership and wheel distributors like VMR said that staggered setups are just fine on my E90 08 328xi. Again, as long as the difference in rolling diameter between the front and rear wheels is less than 1%, it's supposedly OK.

Still scares me, though!

I can't confirm with preLCI, but I got my 2010 LCI with staggered 18s on 193s with RFTs. I'm going to winter with a square 17 setup, but if I upgrade to 19s in the summer, I'll go staggered as well, just making sure I size the rubber correctly. Hope this helps.

If you want some reference, the 'build your own' at the bmwusa site will even give you all the dimensions that you need.
