Not my dealer I know they go into my ecu, they broke one of the clips on the black cover over the ecu sly bastards.

Very true, but as the OP originally stated, he PAID someone else to install it, I guess trying to learn how to un-install and re-install is just too difficult... I personally watched someone install a tune and after that one time I was able to remove and re-install in about 20 minutes my first time, but not everyone can do that... I may be wrong in saying this, but if your not willing to learn how to install your OWN tune, you shouldn't be tuning in the first place, but that's my opinion...

Personally, I think you'd have to be insane on a relatively new car to leave it in. That said, taking it out after it's been in for a while without checking/clearing codes is only slightly less insane.

If you've triggered codes and they check, it won't matter much if it's in or not - and I would assume that it is alot more likely for them to check codes than to pull a cover looking for a tune.

Paid $75 to install.

I pretty much know how to get to the ECU box. I am concern about connecting wrong cablea.

Is there a way for me too see if it has thrown any codes without a tool (I gues its is called BT)?

IF you watch the video's it's pretty self explanatory and you can't really screw it up, the connectors only go in one way, if you have to force it, your doing it wrong...

YOu have to use a Bavarian Technic's tool to see the codes and clear them, they run about $300...

Thanks. I guess I better off without JB3 although the risk of codes is still there. I will give it a shot this weekend. Hey, what is worst that can happen? Blow up my engine???

Nooo....!!! If you did (connect something wrong) you might get a reduced power fault (1/2 engine light), but have confidence in yourself, it's really not that hard to do (then again I'm a computer tech and deal with hardware all the time so that's why it seems easy for me). I highly recommend getting the BT tool... yeah, it's 300 but in the long run it will pay off...

Dude its really easy just read the instructions and watch the video. You will not blow anything up. The most that might happen is you get an ses light on startup or it doesn't start at all. Take your time and you will have no issuse. You have to take the p*ssy off the pedestial.

Again, why would teh tech look? What cause are you giving the tech to take time to remove a bunch of stuff so he can lift the ECU to actually look. They get paid by the job, not by the hour! I leave mine in for service and non-ECU related warranty issues! The JB3 is electronically invisible. Unless you have some issues where by the tech needs to check for diagnostic codes and finds some codes indicative of tuning, you are safe!

Remember the dealership gets paid for all work including warranty work paid by BMW to the dealership. What insentive could you see for the dealer not wanting to have you keep coming back and them getting paid?

IF your doing more than just oil change, i would take it out.
For little things like bulb replacements / oil changes and such, i put the JB3 to Map 0 and bring it in. In this case i would probably just remove it, in case they find something that needs fixing that might deal with the ECU.

Also depends on mods/octane and what MAP you are, or have ever RAN.

judging from the dealers I have worked with you just never know who you are going to get. The last thing you want is a voided warranty so I highly recommend taking your car in for service as stock as possible. I have even seen really horrible dealers void warranties or not cover suspension rattles due to wheels that are other than what the car came with OEM. So yank it before you drop it off.
