Apple IOS8 and iDrive issues playing music

Hi all,
First post and first time BMW owner so go easy on the BMW terminology with me

Since updating to IOS8 my iPhone5 does not seem to be able to properly be controlled via the iDrive (over USB Y cable). I can see the music on the iPhone and select music to play with iDrive (MY11 320d MSport), but it refuses to actually play anything, unless I manually press play on the iPhone itself.

On occasion after an iPhone reboot it works for a while and then fails again randomly.

Lots of people are complaining about exactly this on the apple forums. As usual Apple are silent on any issues they have caused. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6584073?tstart=0

Has anyone had this problem and been able to solve it?

My entertainment system does not appear to be user (USB) upgradeable as there is no upgrade menu option. If it is the fix to upgrade I will have to get it done via my service guy at the next service.

I asked my local BMW service shop and got what I assume is the standard answer that they need to do a "scan" on the car to see what it says. The thing is the car is fine and it worked with IOS7. Apple changed things and are unlikely to fix it.

Regards,
Kent.

Yea iOS 8 brought all kinds of craptastic bugs to iDrive and so many other aspects of the iPhone too- among them the system completely and randomly "forgetting" your Bluetooth, and the wonderful crackling in tracks that crops up now and again.

I have a lil' 6 inch lightning cable and that's how I use it- even with its occasional "control issues" it's tons better than all the Bluetooth tomfoolery- plus you can see the playlists and artists etc via lightning cable (if your vehicle is so equipped.)

I ordered BMW APPS with the car- and now it's completely useless- and to be honest, it was completely useless back then too.

I know there is a "Bluetooth update" on BMWUSA somewhere, and the link escapes me, but it did little to combat the issues.

This used to happen in older iOS versions too. Turn the phone off and then back on, and re connect it. This works for me.

Yes, the reboot method works some of the time for me.

Just to clarify, this is happening via USB (with the Y connector cable) not over bluetooth. I am aware there are many bluetooth issues talked about in the media with recent IOS updates. I am not using bluetooth for audio nor does my car support it, only for phone calls which works fine.
