Does anyone have a copy or just know if they fixed their ticking sound under CPO extended warranty? I was told it would only cost the deductible if it was covered, I was wondering if anyone had this fixed under extended warranty so if they say its not covered i have some proof. not trying to pay $$$$$ for this when i have extended warranty.

I had the valve lifters replaced under the 4 yr warranty, and the head cover replaced under the CPO warranty for the $50. As long as you have an actual BMW CPO warranty you should be fine.

What frustrated me was him saying BMW NA will not allow them to do anything without duplication, but I read about several people receiving service based on video. Was yours ticking constantly or intermitently? I kind of understand them having to duplicate it, but IMO it is VERY obvious from the video that it is the lifter tick.

BTW - Flea, your video sounds normal to me. Mine sounded (actually louder) just like the one Aries posted
That sucks that your BMW dealership won't fix it without replication. The ticking on mine was intermittent. I don't even think it was ticking the day I brought it in. I'm not sure. I didn't lift up the hood and I turned on the music as soon as I got in the car.

The next step for you is to call BMW NA. I'm not sure if they have to replicate the noise. Are there other BMW dealers in your area? I don't know how much this helped, but I joined the BMWCCA and another member on here who tracks his car and is a member of the BMWCCA actually gave me the name of the SA and tech who did work on his car. Maybe if you joined the BMWCCA, jumped on their local club website and got a name of an SA it would help.

I just called up the dealership, was very cordial and asked for the SA. I told the SA that so and so gave me his name and that he might be able to help me out with my problem. I then described the problem to him. He was really cool about it.

If you approach some of these guys angrily and expect results quick (I'm not implying that you may have) they can dig in their heels. That's just human nature. I do that sometimes at work with these pain med seekers who come out and start yelling for pain meds and telling me they need dilauded 3mg IV an hour. Ain't happening. Tylenol for you, buddy...

Anyway, good luck getting it fixed. Let us know what happens - good or bad. These guys need to be held accountable for the design flaw.

328i replaced valve at 12k and replaced head at 48k.
No question asked. They told me valve has been replaced so they are replacing head. Picked up my car today and no noise so far.

Also my engine start is louder than before.

BTW they changed oil and filter and reset the time and mileage on service setting.
Now it shows 2014 25000 miles.
Whaaaaat 2 years and 25000 miles?
I know its synthetic but 25k miles?

I FINALLY got my car back from BMW of Columbia after 33 days. Part of the repair was replacing a leaking one-way check valve to the brake booster which was causing the brake pedal to go rock hard overnight. My SA speculated that this was causing the tick-tick-tick in my car as the car rebuilt vacuum upon re-start. He told me that since the $300 repair (not covered under CPO for some reason) the car hasn't ticked. The REST of the delay was waiting for a part for the electric trunk release latch which STILL hasn't come in. This will be repair #4 for the tick-tick-tick. The exhaust valves have been replaced, but the heads were not. We'll see what we see.

Well today is a year that I got mine fixed with no problems since. BMW NA was awesome in doing a goodwill repair and replaced the cylinder head. At that time the car had a little over 23K miles on the clock and sounded like a diesel. Car running like a charm.

I have an 07' 323i - I have gone down this path to the point where my dealer replaced the cylinder head about a year ago. The ticking is back and i'm quite frustrated as the car is now out of warranty. Apparently if "this" ticking is related to the warranty work that has already been performed it'll be covered. Time will tell. I know that they replaced the old N51 with an N52 head.

Has anyone else had the their head replaced without success? I'd be interested to find out what happened.

Question to those of you that have had lifters or a head replaced under warranty:
Was the ticking noise more apparent upon start-up in the morning?

Mine ticks like hell when I first start it, but then seems to fade as it warms up and becomes much, much quieter after the motor comes to full temp.

That is exact symptom of the design flaw of the N52 from 2006-2009ish. Get the process of the fix started ASAP. There is allot of information in the last 10 pages of this thread. Give it a read, it will help. Good luck going forward.

A quick link that I have provided in the past. A bit dated, but will give you an idea. BMW is well aware of the design flaw, though not too fond of fixing it, as it is money out of BMW's bottom line - $$$$$.

My car is out of warranty and the ticking isn't that bad. But I was wondering if I don't do anything about it will it damage anything in the engine?

I recall in the thread where someone indicated scored parts. I regret now when the dealer replaced the lifters that I did not ask to see it in person. Hopeful someone going forward may ask, and get some recent images after many miles were put on the N52. Not sure how well that would go over at the dealership though....

Thank-you (and all the posters in this thread) very much for all that info. Mine sounds exactly the same as your youtube vid, so I'm going to take some video in the AM, get a solid recording of the sound, then call the dealer.
Glad it's under CPO warranty for another 15 months!

I'll keep y'all updated.

I got my cylinder head replaced about a year ago and I don't have any issues whatsoever. I thank BMWNA for doing a goodwill repair on my car out of warranty. My car had a little over 23K miles when this happen. I took it the first time and no replication, but the next time it happened I took a video with my smartphone and make sure I went by the VIN there in the strut tower mine sounded like a diesel on steroids. Showed to the SA and then call BMWNA and forwarded the video in an email and it was taken care of.

Question

Question: Based on the SIB detailed in post below, should I trust that any E90 manufactured after 11/31/2008 has then new engine head design, that eliminated the LIFTER TICK noise?

SIB link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...postcount=1310

NOTE: I’ve been using the following site to verify production date, based on VIN number.

VIN Decoder: http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

Update: Another member (ray_futbol) has an e90 manufactured/produced after 11/31/2008, AND YET he's experienced the engine ticking - see link below:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...3&postcount=26

So, anyone have thoughts on this? Could it be that BMW continued to install faulty engine heads after 11/31/2008? Or worse, that the redesigned head is not the final fix ?

NOTE: I'm thinking of purchasing an used e90...hence the concern/question...

i skimmed the first 85 pages and read the last 10. you guys are all describing the issue im having. i bought my car used and the dealer said "that's the sound they all make, youre under warranty anyway blah blah"

the problem is, i own an '08 335. does this rule out the lifter/head issue?

i will grab a video when i get home. it's definitely pronounced and not random.

He could've been referring to a different noise who knows. We would only be sure if he posted a video. He also said it was very faint. The real valve tick is anything, but faint. It sounds like hammering.

Here's my scenario.

I bought the car 10 months ago (April). Saw that the previous owner in January had the ticking issue and got the lifters replaced. Since April I have only put about 2,300 miles on my car (about 5,000 miles since the lifters). I heard the tick once a couple months ago and again 2 days in a row this past weekend. I have new car warranty until the 20th and CPO until 2014. I Started my car today (50 degrees) and let it idle for 10 minutes and no tick.

I have a video of the tick over this last weekend, but is it even worth going to dealer for such a rare issue?

Get it replaced. It's a BMW. You paid a lot of money for it. It's supposed to be known for good quality and engineering. I don't expect any less. As some people have shown before, parts get scored quicker when this problem persists. I bet it will shorten the life span of your engine in the long run. I plan on keeping my car as long as I can so I want mine repaired.

Speaking of repair, I had the lifters replaced back on January 20. Since then, I've driven the car twice since we've had some phenomenal weather. Unfortunately, the lifter ticking has come back. Time to bring the car back to the shop.
