Does anyone know what I should expect to pay for BMW to add an oil cooler to my 335xi?

Since its a CPO, I'd sort of like BMW to install it for me...

800-1200 were the quotes I received.

I wouldn't even bother however...Every now and again I rip hard in my n54...and I mean hard. I've never had temps creep above 250. So unless you plan on tracking your car often in high heat...allocate those funds elsewhere.

I am in south florida with an oil cooler, and after 3-5 runs stock, I am above 250

Ask a local custom ecu tuner sometimes they can control when your fan comes on in a custom flash, if you want to go that route. I had that done with my Evo.

I had this done right after I learned BMW didn't install the 2nd cooler. It cost me 900 bucks for them to install and the only reason I did that was because I wanted no issues regarding warranty. BMW cooler parts and BMW techs installing it.
So this is a real not imaged data point for the install.
By the way I almost never see my temps over 250. In Germany when I ran it hard but respected the 4500 rpm limit it hit 270 and that was at 50 F so it helps a lot. I plan to go from JB plus to Cobb Stage 1 and want the cooler to help keep the temps in check...;

Hey man I'm in Denver, in the same boat. So, around $900 just for the labor? That would be reasonable through the dealer.

Why do you want to pay stealership cost for something that doesn't even work that great? For the same cost, you can buy something more effective. Get the ER Sport Series Oil Cooler ($795) with the retrofit ($425)

I have done a few track days and pushed pretty hard and with JB4 and 'max cool' mode never seen the oil temp go over 1/2 way and 5 minutes back in the sheds drops to 1/3

sorry i might have mis read the thread

i have the small stock oil cooler in the passenger (for you lefties) wheel well. its pretty small and was stock for us folk down under.

I have been looking at the upgraded oil coolers for a while but to date i have seen no need to upgrade.

I have the dct box if that makes a difference and the only time i have seen a limp (gearbox not engine) is in heavy traffic whilst giving the car a squirt.

As far as i kno, ER is really the only reputable company that offers both oil-cooler upgrade kits. They come in two versions, the Sport kit (basically replaces the OEM oil cooling hardware, could be used to retrofit if your car didn't come w/ an oil cooler) and a race kit (basically its 2 Sports kits, putting the cooling ducts in both the front right & left wheel wells).

Since you already have OEM oil cooler installed, prob wouldn't be that bad (the ER Sports cooler mounts in the same spot as the OEM). Unless you're tracking/dragging your car, this is kinda an unnecessary upgrade over the OEM oil cooler unless your oil temps are really bad (250 is normal operating temp).


If you're retrofitting it'll take a little longer than an upgrade since they'll be starting from scratch + will have to cut up your wheel well for proper ventillation.

Go to your regional forum & get some local Indy's to give you an estimate -- You're in CA so you've got plenty of install shops to pick from that would have experience w/ this kinda work.

Why isn't there a kit that leaves the stock cooler alone and adds another oil cooler on the opposite side?

Why buy the sport cooler from ER to just replace one that is already there?

Seems like a lot of work to go from having one cooler to having still just one cooler.

I made this for rougly $650. I previously had the AR Design oil cooler (for sale if you're interested) but that didn't do much for tracking.

This is the only solution I've found to actually do something for track driving.

-Bought oil coolers and lines directly from Setrab (625 series)
-Bought oil cooler housing adapter from Turner Motorsports
-Got Border Collie from bcrmn.org

You could do one of two things:

1. Buy an upgraded oil cooler core (the same in the ER kit I think) directly from Setrab and just swap out your OEM for the higher quality cooler (BrianMN, could you comment on whether or not the Setrab unit is the same/similar size to the OEM oil cooler core).
2. Contact ER & order a Sports Oil Cooler Kit for a right-hand drive car, that way you'll have the kit that goes in the left-side wheel well.

I'm assuming why they don't offer a kit to compliment the OEM one because it prob needs special hoses/connection terminals for two oil coolers being run to the OEM oil filter.

It looks like the rear shield would sit flush w/ the fender lining, if not directly exposed to the wheel well, right behind the protective shield that the OEM cooler already has in place.
