Wiper fluid spray diagnostics

Want to double check my diagnosis before getting to work (2008 E93 N51)

No wiper fluid coming out. I freshly filled the fluid tank - pulled the lever. Fluid comes out from the headlight cleaner spray, but nothing from the windshield nozzles.

Removed the rubber hose that connects to the nozzles and blowed through them. On one occasion, I heard gurgling sounds coming from the fluid tank. On another occasion, the fluid came out of the other end- where we put the fluid in through. Still, nothing coming out of the hose near the windshield.

I'm guessing that the next step is to remove the passenger side fender and replace the pump? Should I first order the pump and then open it, or should I open it first to see if there is some other issue? Are there other issues possible? I want to avoid opening it up twice, but if I order a new pump and there is a different issue, then that would suck too.

Thanks!

You don't need to remove the fender. You can access and remove the reservoir and pump by removing the passenger wheel and plastic wheel well cover. Not difficult at all.

I would just order it. They are cheap.

You have two pumps. One for the lights and one for the wipers. If your wipers aren’t working, seems like a pretty easy diagnosis. Pretty easy swap. It’s nice if you can drain the fluid out first since it will run out when removing the old motor, but not necessary.

+1 Uro pump was what I used. It was about $6 at the time plus shipping off Rock Auto. I also ordered a new tip strainer, about $2.

Pump and strainer:

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...+grommet,11107

I also changed the fluid reservoir filler pipe while at it:

I think there were three plastic rivets holding the wheel well cover to the fender. I did not have new ones so I left them out.

The impeller seal (the black grommet on the motor shaft) of the BMW factory pump failed, and the fluid got into the motor chamber, causing rust and eventually electrical short. Shitty material I guess.

Do we need a new strainer coz the old one does not fit? It seems like a piece of plastic, the old one should be fine right?

You should be able to reuse it. There is the hard plastic strainer at the tip, and there is a softer rubber grommet that seals against the reservoir tank.

Some members reported when you remove the pump, the strainer might fall into the reservoir tank. Then you will have to fish it out.

Both are included in the Uro $2 bag. And for only $2, I replaced them. And my filler pipe plastic was disintegrating from the heat of the engine, so I replaced that too.

Here was the original setup, note the strainer and sealing grommet:

No voltage at WW spray motor...

I have same problem: no fluid sprays onto windshield, but mine is that there is no electricity coming to the motor. I bought a new motor, but discovered on installation that I have no electricity coming to the motor. The fuze is good. What could it be? I guess the stalk could be bad, but I hate to start taking things apart, if it could be something else. Any ideas? ... thanks.... I know I need to check the ground wire from the connector, will do that today.

Check the fuse. And if the fuse is good, scan for error codes. Clear them and see if the pump resumes working.
