clunk noise front
2011 335xi n55 6mt
I've been hearing and feeling a metal to metal knock/clunk type noise which seems to come from somewhere underneath the front of the car. Every morning I back out of the garage onto the driveway and hit the brakes I hear this clunk. Its gotten pretty intense now and I can even feel it through the pedals so I guess it resonates through the frame. I can't tell if its suspension or not but I do have KW V1s for about a year. I have not had any noises since install though. No clunks and no squeeks while driving either. Slow or fast, bumps or not. Both thrust arms and one drive shaft were replaced in the last year due to normal wear and tear. This clunk usually happens after the car sits for a while. At least 3-4 hours and once you start driving I don't hear it anymore. Does not appear to be affecting drivability either but who knows. One more interesting bit of info. In the winter, the car spent a night at aproximately -13C -15C outside and when I got in to start and warm up I moved the steering back and forth which produced a similar noise consistently. In warmer temps I could not reproduce it though. Anyone experienced something similar? Last edited by belcom; 03-15-2016 at 12:16 PM.. |

I've seen this test done on my car when my thrust arms needed replacing and the front wheels indeed moved similarly as in the vid. Not as much though. I will have it diagnosed soon at the dealer and let you know. |

Apparently it was brake pad slap. That's what they call it. Its pretty damn loud. Seems to happen more when its cold and wet. Once brakes heat up its gone. Talked to a buddy of mine and it appears his X5M does this as well.

I think I have the same noise you are describing and a friend of mine that used to have a shop said its because our e90 has floating brakes and the noise is normal. Mine does this every morning or after work when car has been sitting for at least 6-8 hrs and it goes away after I start driving.
