My truck is 2012 so still under warranty. The dealer will never know your car has been remaped, unless there is a major engine problem that'll require live data loging or tuner cels's would be present. I had my both 3 series remaped and under warranty with many dealer visits without any problems. However it's a risk your taking when running a tune.
I just picked up my car tonight from the dealer after the recall. I believe they had to reprogram the car. If it was flash tuned, wouldn't they have been able to detect?

Nope. They won't have detected it but a flash tune would be wiped out if you had it.

ecotune remap

Had my 2011 335d tuned by Stan over at ecotune. Fast turn around and a pleasure to deal with. He did an ECU remap and EGR delete. I had the dpf removed. What a difference. It feels like a totally different car. Dyno 318hp and
520lbs torque at the wheels.

Was it physically removed or just bypassed and disconnected and can be reverted back to stock? Congrats anyway!

It was deleted in the ECU so it stay in the open position. I will try to put up exhaust video. I am not good with all this computer stuff I will have my kids help me haha. Also had muffler removed and left only the resonator in place so it sounds nice. Not too loud.

This sounds promising, but we need to hear/see your video clip. What was the cost to do this if you don't mind? Also, how much louder would you rate this on a 1-10 scale from the stock exhaust sound? Thanks and congrats!

Yes Ecotune is in Scottland and my car is U.S. He can tune U.S models. It takes about a week or so for shipping time, but it well worth the wait and he stands behind his work. On a scale of 1-10 the exhaust note is about a 4 above stock. I will try to post some video this week and dyne.

Pizzaman, this is not intended as a criticism; I'm wondering about the EGR strategy. Wouldn't it be a better plan to install an EGR block that prevents the gases from getting to the intake (and gunking up everything over time), and then get the coding for deleting the valve?

It seems like the approach from Ecotune leaves the door open to continue the gunking of the engine, since the valve remains in place in the open position. As an alternative, might it be better to code the valve in the closed position (if that's possible) for the reasons I mentioned above? Again, not a criticism, just trying to understand the strategy, as I have much to learn about our diesels.

That's great if EGR is kept open and not physically removed!

Based on my life experience, I own a fleet of semi trucks with 07 Cummins ISX pre-emmision engines equipped with EGR valves. The valves have been disconnected and blocked at the intake manifold, that lead the EGR to stay and sometimes stock in the open position! The trucks ECMs where reflashed in a similar manner to remove the EGR from the programming. All this lead to a cooler running engine, increased power, response and better MPG. They've been running like that since the end of engine warranty around 3 years ago.

The difference however with new EPA08-10 truck engines including the BMW M57 is that the DPF and in latter the DEF is present and requires a different, more thorough approach to make this happen as the exhaust and dosing system is totally different then before.

I would love to hear more feedback on this EGR removal on M57 after a longer term driving.

NRG, it sounds like your fleet has closed off the flow of exhaust gases from the intake - right? If they are blocked off at the intake manifold, then functionally the gases are prevented from being recirculated, which prevents the gunk up process. Not recirculating the hot gases leads to the benefits you described: cooler running engine, increased power, response and better MPG.

Is what you have done with your fleet the same as Pizzaman's setup? It sounded like his setup leaves the EGR valve open (allowing the continued flow of exhaust gases) while your fleet's setup blocks the flow of the gases.

Keep posting, I'll eventually figure out what's going on! LOL

@DieselDiner

Correction: I didn't realize that I said "open". In my previous description of ISX "disconnect" I meant that some who did it wrong had the valves stuck open. Mine where first properly disconnected by me, then reprogramed by a tuner then blocked.

The 02-07 ISX engine is setup with EGR valve and cooler on the hot-side of the engine and intake manifold on the cold-side. Blocking the EGR at the intake manifold on the ISX is just taking a preventative step further after the reprogramming, to make sure no gases will be rerouted back into the cyl head and to free up the space inside the intake manifold pipe, since the EGR return pipe runs inside the intake manifold and blocking all the air flow that the engine could use. We've physically cut off those EGR pipes and put a metal plug in it's base. Leaving the manifold free to "breathe". Some even getting the valve welded shut, to avoid any unnecessary mishaps. If you'll block the EGR at the intake manifold without "disconnecting" it first, you'll blow up the complete plumbing and gaskets of the system with soot in no time. I've seen it happen, it ain't pretty and very expensive to repair.

The E90 M57 EGR to my understanding should stay permanently closed after the reprogramming. It does lead to another few questions however, since the engine has DPF. Number one - If it is closed on M57 then the DPF is screwed, it won't handle the amount of free-flowing exhaust unless reprogramed as well? Number two - If the valve is open all the time, then what's the point of reprogramming if all the exhaust gasses is being dumped back into the head in double ammounts!? DPF equipped engines is another issue altogether that I don't have hands on experience. I do know some who removed it with mixed results on the newer 2008+ ISXs.

wow EGR removed, A question to all our "D"s rear mufflers are connected at the end, I believe its something about baffloing the sound I plan to have disconnected to see if we get a better sound out of the exhaust

egr

Sorry guys I made a mistake. The egr is in the closed position to keep the gasses from recirculatiing. Also the cost is about $500 for the remap. I attached the dyne which has stock/eco/max.

Nice gains. Is this your car's dyno or eco tune's dyno for a diesel?

What is this "eco" setting you speak of and how are the setting adjusted?
