Rattling sound when letting off gas: Wastegate problem?
My car is making a rattling snare sound when i let off the gas when either in manual mode (drive) or parking and revving the engine. The sound gets less aggressive as the rpms drop down, and it goes away somewhere between 1200-1700 rpms. There is no rattling at idle.
Any ideas to what it is and do you think it is serious enough to get it checked out under CPO before it develops into a more serious problem? Thanks! |

That is the noise. You have was wtegate rattle. Take it an get your new turbo. CPO isn't required. The wastegate warranty was extended to 6 years or 82,000 miles. You are covered. It won't get more serious, just more noisey.

I'm worried they're going to turn me away because it's not serious? Any thoughts?
I'd be glad to get new turbos |

I have the rattle and im at 79k miles... I made an appointment with BMW of Seattle but I dont want them screwing around. I have a trip to AZ for christmas that I plan on taking my bimmer to and if they try the software update BS on me and the turbo's go out after 82k on me I am going to club baby seals!

Without a doubt, that's our world-famous WG rattle. Your noise is plainly obvious; I'd doubt the dealer you bring it to would try to pull the "it's normal" spiel.
There is a middle-ground alternative that dealers may try depending on the diagnosis though. The software fix is the first. After that they may adjust the waste gate actuators to try and get rid of the noise. If that doesn't work (or that fix doesn't last), that's when I've seen them pull the snails and completely replace them. Good luck op, here's to brand new turbos! |

Yeah mine happened at 35k miles and was replaced at 40k miles. I hope to get another 40k+ out of them. That is what I was dealing with. I was trying to deal with it for 6 months hoping it would go away , ( yeah right) but really thinking of getting a new car. Anyway I was able to get replacement turbos. Just note that the reason why the dealer turns away most people is because the check engine light for reduced power is the big sign that it's failed. Its easier for them to justify the problem with paper print out results. Also read the service bulletin, it gives the test requirements . Rattle clank at 3500 rpm 5-6 times in a row while not in gear.

Its the wastegate actuators it might be both in most cases its just the rear. The wastegate actuarors are not covered under the extended warranty to 82k and their about$100 for both from BMW but they still want over $3 gs to install them due to it taking 30 hours of labor. Its nothing serious you won't loose power due to it its just annoying :/ If i were you i would just replace the rear wastegate actuator and leave it at that,it should take more then %50 of that rattle away other then that the front one is very hard to get to and they will rape you on it. gl

I get a rattle when I start my 335i sometimes and when I shut it down.
Sounds very "tingy" but i cant put my finger on it yet. Got underneath the car during an oil change and didnt feel any loose heat shields. Could it be this WG issue or are there other options? |

When you have a rattle like this the first thing that will be replaced is the wastegate actuators. If your wastegates need replacing then BMW will have to replace the turbos which they don't like doing until they are 100% sure. New turbos would be nice but if the cars power still feels strong I doubt its your turbos. Good luck.

the problem is the labor but yeah, it was obviously covered under CPO for anyone wondering. |
