It depends on how you look at it. BMW says change the oil after one year or when the Condition Based Service indicator requests for one.
But many people believe that you should change the oil after break in (1500miles) or around 7000miles. If you want to give you car the best, change around then. |

It depends on the color of the car. But for most BMW colors...5000 miles works....and works for me. 15,000+ miles, as per the manual...and the dash indicator, seems excessive.

According to BMW, you should basically wait until your engine ceases. I would think thats a fine time to change your oil.
But in all seriousness I would do it at 1200-2000 miles for the first oil change. |

+1 for the early change. I have done that in all my cars. It might be excessive on the cautious side, but $50 for an oil change is cheap insurance. Besides, I bought my car and I intend to keep it well past the "free maintenance" period. If it were a lease I wouldn't do anything that wasn't required, and would beat the living crap out of it from about 750 miles on...

BMW recommends 15000 miles but depending on how you drive, I would do every 7000 miles.
Do the 7000 miles yourself and when it hit 15000 miles go to the dealer.

I think my SA gave me good advice on this one....
Lease? 15k, it's not your car, do you upgrade an apt. you're renting? Of course not. Let me redo the kitchen on the apt. I'm renting, not. Own? Now it depends on if you're keeping it long. If not, like 3 years, 15k. UNLESS you think you're going to sell it privately and the buyer is going to want to see interval changes and proof thereof. Own and keep forever? 1200-1500 break-in, every 7,500, taking the 15k for free. Also, he said absolutely no problem if you DIY, it's not rocket science changing the oil. |

I would change the first oil at 1200-1500 miles, and after that every 7000 miles
