Cafe au lait

Hey guys,

Not sure how many of you, are from or reside in France, but I came back from Paris not too long ago (was there for NYE). Since then I have found it absolutley impossible to find a coffee shop in NYC that serves cafe au lait

I am a huge coffee drinker and will admit that I am addicted to it; I need at least 3 cups a day. The cafe au lait that I had in France was the most amazing cup of coffee that I had in my entire life, all you fellow Starbucks drinkers: FORGET ABOUT THAT CRAP! You have to try a natural cup of Cafe Au Lait.

Anyway, here is my question: How in the hell do you make it so good and where can I find a decent place in Manhattan that replicates the standard? Everywhere I go and ask for a cafe au lait, they either say they don't have it OR tell me that a Latte is the same thing. A Latte is NOT the same thing. And frankly, unless its made correctly, it tastes like shit.

Thanks in advance!

-Dmitriy

It is just coffee with milk. It could be any number of factors, the quality of the coffee and the richness of the milk. We have pretty bland milk in the US. And by the way, coffee is meant to be drunk black. Unless you are a woman. Then sweetening it and diluting it with milk and stuff is acceptable.

Well then call me gay, but that coffee was the shit.

I understand that the direct translation is coffee with milk, but you just can not find it here in the US. I'm going to try to make it by boiling the milk and whisking it before I pour it into the cup. We'll see...

It is the direct translation but it is also what it is. Cafe au lait, caffe latte are essentially the same thing. Just make sure you are using a darker roast if you cannot make espresso.

Save an empty, clean gallon milkjug, and pour the hot milk into it (careful not to burn yourself). Then cap it and shake. You'll get frothier results.

Good Café au Lait in America? Try the French Quarter in New Orleans.
