Next Generation Nav System as of Jul 2012
Not a lot of detail, but a teaser.
Navigation system updates (609) Starting as of July 2012 production, the next generation Navigation Professional system (609) will be available on the 5 Series Sedan, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series Sedan and ActiveHybrid 3. This new system offers faster processing and an enhanced design over the current system and incorporates several great new features: • Streamlined radio/media menu structure • Improved navigation submenu structure • Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information • Weather information in navigation map • POI enrichment* • GoogleTM autocomplete* * requires BMW Assist Convenience Plan. Reads as if they are re-doing the menus and commands but there is nothing in this short description that would indicate that the actual function of the navigation will be fixed to make it at least equal to capability of my 3 year old $120 Garmin. Also I guess not coming to the regular 3 series.

I don't know what the native resolution of the F3x display is relative to the E9x. However since the E9x iDrive platform was used on the 2012 F3x, it would stand to reason that it might be possible to do an E9x retrofit to this system. Thoughts Alex?
