Is coolant flush absolutely necessary after water pump replacement?

I am having the pump replaced due to failure. Had the common red temp symbol and engine failsafe shut off.

Its CPO series, however thermostat is not covered and neither is the coolant flush.

So i told them to do the thermostat as well.

Dealer wants $150 for coolant flush (thats labout and parts).

Is the flush absolutely necessary or can i get away with just having them top off the coolant?

Just taking the pump and thermostat out of the car will empty about 60-70% of the coolant, so as long as they are not re-using the old coolant and using new (which is about 20 bucks for the jug they will need), then you are mostly getting new coolant anyway - an extra $150 is a big rip!

thanks guys.

I called another dealership to check in regards to the thermostat being covered and they said that it is not covered under CPO. Only waterpump.

If the stat isn't covered, pay for it out of pocket. Wouldn't it be a shame if the car needed a thermostat out of warranty?

A move well played by BMW to only cover waterpump and not thermostat, knowing that people usually get them both done at the same time.

All about the money grab.

This is correct, and I'd even up the percentage to 95%. The pump is at the bottom of the cooling system, so you have to completely drain the system to remove the pump anyway. The only coolant that doesn't come out without some effort is in the block and it is not that much. It would be more effort for the shop to try and recover the coolant (i.e. keep it clean) than to just use new coolant.

Modern cars with aluminum engines do not need "flushing" of the cooling system. The BMW coolant change procedure does not call for "flushing" the system, but rather just draining it.

Ha ha. Coolant "flush" for an extra $150 after removing the water pump. That's f'ing hilarious! I'd be tempted to punch the SA in the face if he tried that shit with me.

Removing the hoses drains most of the coolant already and the rest comes out by unscrewing the radiator drain plug. This is standard op when replacing pump and t-stat.

How much is the dealership charging you for the water pump replacement?

I suspect that this issue is that technically, there is nothing wrong with the thermostat. They will not replace a part that is still functioning, "just because they are in there". If the thermostat failed and the water pump was still good, I suspect it would be the other way around.

An extra $150 to "flush" the coolant is silly though.

Water pump was covered under CPO warranty. I just had to pay for the thermostat and $50 warranty deductible.
