It may well be the same DME, but that doesn't mean the calibrations or even the logic behind them is even remotely the same. In fact, I'd venture to say that they are not. Further, I don't know if there's a separate transmission control unit in these cars as there is in the Audis, of if this all done in DME.

6hp19-34 is all the same 6 speed family of trans. Theoretically, it seems feasible.

I do not understand this.... That is the who point of a forum is to discuss. Just becuase you purchased it does not mean it is the end all be all to tranny upgrades and everyone must run out and get it. If another member had an issue with this company in the past, it is in the best interest of the community for these issues to be brought to light and discussed.

According to who's theories?

Factually, I can say to a certainty that if there are dimensional differences, you won't be able to exchange the converter from one into the other. The 5HP19 in my S4 and the 5HP24 from the RS6 are the "same" 5 speed "family", but they are completely different dimensionally, and somewhat different internally. (I know this, as I had the two sitting side by side, a couple of years ago.) I couldn't exchange very much of anything between to two.

What dimensions? the 6hp19/21 and 6hp26/28 are already in use in the same vehicle: 335I/335D?

Maybe you're correct, but "the same vehicle" is not the same. If even the bellhousing, (which mates to the tail end of the motor), is different, the converter won't be compatible.

...believe me. There are MANY people, including just about everyone reading this, and all of the transmission shops who work with these ZF components, who wish it were as simple, but just isn't.

Agreed. Believe me, I know that an automatic transmission is extremely complicated, however, someone should just try taking 4 grand, and buying a 6hp26 from a wrecked 335D, then swapping it into a 335I, to see whether a plug and play is possible.

The video you just posted shows max 450NM for 6HP21, along with emails from ZF in the other thread stating the same thing..

The video (especially the fake graph) was made by the sales and marketing team. The specs in the catalog came from the engineers.

...and the conversation with the ZF engineering staff, as shared via email in the linked thread?

Someone, (probably the marketing folks) cut and pasted, the wrong set of specs.

It will fit, to repeat, you can't get it programmed into your car. (Maybe with a hack)

Software around the gearbox exits of 3 parts:

ZF software on the box
BMW software on the box (to make it brand specific)
DME software that should recognize the box. (This is the issue!)

Also the BMW software for the box will be different for a diesel then for a petrol engine.

Awesome news! Can't wait to see the result since I want one too
I had Level 10 tranny on my TT FX35 pushing 420hp/tq and also my old buddy with TT FX35 pushing over 500 had no issues. After the tranny uograde I was able to beat Cayenne Turbo S (SUV war!!! ) There r more succesful Level 10 kit out there than not. They also built tranny for my buddy Conrad out in Philly for his Buick runs below 8 or 9sec 1/4. enrita, good luck to you and thanks for sharing this with e90post.

I hope Level10 has changed their ways and improved their processes. Even from a completely selfish point of view I would LOVE it if Level10 (or IPT, or 517), would get the 6HP21 figured out. I own one, have no real options because of a physical limitation, and am still a fan of the modding game, despite my best judgment, and I'll eventually want to go beyond 450 horsepower. (I will no longer blaze trails, however. It's too expensive, and it makes a hobby into a battle.)

In the meantime I STRONGLY recommend that people take a "wait and see" attitude with respect to Level10 and performance rebuilds of these transmissions in general. Level10 has a long and distinguished reputation of failure when it comes to the ZF gearbox. At the very least, do yourself a favor and take a ride in a car equipped with the modded valvebody. This modification completely changes the character of the car, and I would say that most people would find that change inappropriate for a car that is used for commuting, or other comfort driving.

-Michael
Nobody wants to hear facts from people that lived it themselves.

TS, good luck with that Level10 tranny "build". Deja Vu all over again.

BTW, I hope for nothing but the best with the TS and that the tranny holds up well for 10s of thousands of trouble free miles and boost!
