*Newbie* E90 320D Member with questions

Hey all,

I've been lurking here for sometime and thought I would join up. I'm Mark from Essex, up around near Colchester but spend most of my life on in the A12 car park

I bought my first BMW mid last year. It is a 2007 E90 320D. I do around 20-25k a year and the 320D best suited my needs (At the time the 330D was out of my price range )

I've had quite a few cars, including Honda Civic Type R, Mondeo ST 155 and my previous car was a Skoda Fabia vRS (Stage 1 remap @ 180bhp/300lb)

Anyway, here she is, pretty standard at the moment.

I've replaced most of my interior and number plate bulbs for LEDs, I have a set of BMW performance black grilles on order. Black lines to come later

The car came with a CR-Tech Tuning box which was fitted by the previous owner, he was expecting it to make no difference but increased the MPG so left it in. I've not touched it, but was going to remove it when I get it mapped.

A couple of questions.

1 - I get a slight hesitation If I hold the revs at 1700 RPM where the car judders slightly. After doing some research on here it looks like I'm not the only one. One member said it was resolved by a software update? Assuming that a remap should cure this?

2 - One of the last bulbs to change is the front and rear Dome lights. Can someone point me in the right direction of what bulbs/LED panel to get?

3- Rear spoiler, can someone tell me what spoiler Danny.B has on his car and where I can get it?
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=342 It looks fantastic!

4 - Since I do a fair few miles anything to watch out for? The car has now done 100k and the last service was at 91k, which was full one with the breather pipe replaced (Recommended by BMW indy techs)

Hi mark and welcome, i can help answer the interior bulb question as I have just done mine.
I used the following

main dome lights 2 bulbs Item picture 8 Xenon White SMD LED 501 T10 W5W WEDGE CANBUS

for the map lights I used 4 bulbs 5 Xenon White SMD LED 501 T10 W5W WEDGE CANBUS

In short ebay style ones, my tip is to slightly file the edges that you push into the holders on these, as the nature of the bulb being on a PCB is its squared off, by adding a little edge to it makes life a bag load easier to get them in.
Hope that helps and I love the colour of yours, it was one of the choices i would have gone for.

The lip on there looks like the standard M3 lip...I got an aftermarket one painted and delivered for next to nothing recently.

Welcome to the forums mate, the car looks spot on, love Le Mans blue, the spoiler I am sure is from BCMoto, a lot of forum members including myself have bought from their eBay store, the fit and finish is perfect and the cost if remember correctly is about £40 painted and delivered, they come very highly recommended

I have the same thing, I've read that it is the EGR Valve getting coked in carbon, I've had a look at mine and as expected it is hideously filthy! Having it cleaned at the end of the month at service time

My dome lights have these in:

Thanks, I might get the EGR Valve cleaned next week. I cleaned out the EGR on my Mondeo ST TDCi a few years back and ran allot smoother. Let me know how you get on Adam.

Replaced every interior bulb for LEDs now. Thanks again for the Dome bulb advice. I found I had to bend the small pins back which connect the bulb in order to wedge the LED in.

Very please with the result. Black BMW Performance Kidneys received in the post this morning. They will go on with the new front tyres next week

LEDs look spot on, I love mine done the lot and well worth the money. Just a pain in the arse to fit as I said before I filed mine down on the ends after a lot of effort and finding out the hard way, The puddle lights under the doors now do in fact light up puddles and any near by lakes they are that good

Looks good mate.

I can answer point one as I've owned a 320d and experienced it. Assuming you have the N47 engine, this is your clutch juddering. There is a software update available from BMW which slightly raises the revs but IMO, this never cured it. My car only did 20,000 miles until I got rid, but BMW replaced numerous clutches and flywheels on my old car, under warranty. Only the very latest clutch cured it for good.

If it bugs you and you have full BMW service history, my advice would be to push for a goodwill gesture. They will pay 100% parts and 50% labour, leaving you half the labour cost to pay.

Have a read at these two threads that discuss this in detail...

This week the car has been in for a couple of bits.

- New Front Tyres
OEM Bridgestone Potenza's. I prefer the handing on RTFs (I know, I must be mad right )

- BMW Performance Grille Fitted

- Engine Mount
Was feeling a vibration when I was in traffic, raising the revs slightly cured the problem. I thought it was all sorts. Dropped it off at my Indy BMW Specialist and straight away they said it might be the engine mount. It was, Engine sound is spot on now.

Gave her a clean and a full wax this morning...

car parts

Alrite mate

i have the m47n2 engine in mine and these are the problems i have had so far.

i bought the car at 100,000 not at 147,000

i bought a tuning box and it caused nothing but problems, car cutting out hesatation fuel pump warnings, they are a waste of money in my experience nothing but trouble.

i got rid of that and got it remapped for £300 and what a difference the car pulls like a train the difference is amazing, car is averaging 50 mpg and i drive it hard. so get it remapped asap.
it has been remapped for about 22,000 and i have had no problems. with the extra power the clutch was slipping so i got it replaced and this solved the next prob aswell.

i use to get clutch judder in 1st gear most of the time so i had the fly wheel and clutch changed,
on inspection it was the fly wheel that was shot and the clutch was hardly worn.

new clutch and fly wheel and no more problems i used a luk clutch kit.

i stripped my turbo to inspect it and it was fine, i replaced the bearings and seals when i was in there, it has done another 30,000 and is working fine.
i wouldnt worry to much as long as you change the oil every 10,000.

suspension,

all my shocks were leaking or worn so i replaced them with sachs oem and put eibach springs on. returned it back into the ultimate driving machine.

bushes

bushes at 100,000 will be done so i replaced front and rear,

rear sub frame bushes will start to knock and there are four they will need replaced.

there is a lower ball joint on the rear at the hub, it will need replaced you will know when it starts to knock or the wheel has play in it. i have replaced it twice now.

these are all wear and tear parts on all cars, it is just a cost of motoring and how hard you drive it

good luck with yours.

Fantastic, thanks jkas1984

I'll get her mapped in the new year. Did you get it Dyno'd, before and after? If so - what were your results?

I'll be looking to get my bushes done next service. The last time it went in for service was 91k. Its just done over 101k now.

Were you having any issues with your Turbo before you stripped it down?

Thanks,
Mark

I got mine mapped at AMD tuning, from 170 to 220Bhp and 440nm torque. (Dyno'd) - has given it that little bit of extra oomph it was lacking.
