Water pump replaced. Was the coolant replaced?

So I got my waterpump replaced under warranty. It was weird that they didn't change the thermostat while they were at it (they said if it's not broken they are not going to change it) ---- Anyways, I am curious to know if the coolant is changed when the waterpump is changed. I've owned my car since 58k on my 07 335i and it's currently at 92k. Is it time to change the coolant? If so, what type of coolant is recommended?

Yes 99.9% of the time, the coolant is drained and refilled with new coolant during the replacement of the water pump.

The thermostat is not usually replaced unless there is a fault (MAP Cooling) or you have overheated. If you did experience an overheating of the engine, then in most cases the t-stat is replaced for good measure.

They probably didn't flush it fully, but when you replace the water pump about half of the coolant is drained, so half of it is new!

Thanks. It was weird because on the invoice/receipt it didn't say anything about the charge for coolant or for the labor for replacement....maybe the labor is built into the waterpump replacement.

Yeah they would done it. Probably Would've been a good idea to do the thermostat as well

they said they would have charged me for labor to change the thermostat. I understand paying for the thermostat but it seriously shouldnt take much than a few minutes to take off the thermostat and replace it with a new one.

the old one was bolted to the old waterpump (not to the car). They had to unbolt it and move it over to the new waterpump. So yea same amount of work regardless. Undo two bolts, reattach two bolts. Doesn't matter if they put in a new thermostat or old one, they still had to bolt it to the new waterpump.

I had a timing belt replaced on an Audi at an indy shop many years ago. Anyways, the mechanic removed the radiator to do the job and I asked him if he put new coolant in. He did not - he just collected it and poured it back in. I wasn't happy, but I can't say it ever caused any problems.

They should have coolant listed on the invoice/paperwork you received from the Service Dept. Their SOP is to change coolant when they do water pump (well down here anyway)....also they strongly recommended changing the thermostat as a precaution.

The service manual does call for the replacement and complete flush if the filling system when something is replaced.
