Auto Stop Start 320D ? Problem

I've had a new 08 320D for a couple of weeks, the auto stop start is new to me as my last 320D did not have it.
So far it has not stopped the car automatically at all. The car has done 600+miles.
The handbook says it should stop the car when stationary at lights when in neutral and the brake on. This has not happened yet.
I've turned off the lights, air con and heater and the radio and still nothing.
The car has bluetooth phone, Ipod (glovebox lead) and a satnav plugged into the cigar lighter. None of these I would have thought pull a lot of power.

Is this normal for auto stop start, I've sat a lights for minutes and nothing has happened.
Any help would be appreciated.

THis might be a stupid question on my part and if so, I apologize. When you are putting the car in neutral, are you taking your foot off of the clutch once in neutral?

Yea, pull to a stop, take out of gear release clutch and put on handbrake. Engine keeps going!

I think your foot has to be on the regular brakes for it to work. Do you have your foot on the brake pedal?

The engine has to be at temperature and the outside temperature has to be over 3 degrees celcius. Also make sure the button next to the seat heating button is turned off (=automaticly turned off when you start your car).

It is not required to put your foot on the brake or put the handbrake on.
After 10 min of driving my car turns its engine off while standing still...

I'm driving an '08 E92 320d.

I don't think so, not sure tho. I can't really remember when my car first did the auto start/stop thingy but i'm sure it was before 500 km (about 300 miles) so yours should be doing that.
When I stop at a red light for instance, the moment I take my foot of the clutch the engine turns off, displaying the auto start/stop symbol on screen. I'm running seat heat and Ipod too, sometimes (rarely) when in start/stop mode after 10 sec or so the car starts up his engine by himself (because he need the power).

Like I said before make sure your engine is at temparature and its minimum 4 degrees celcius outside. Also there's a minimum speed (really low, i would say 10 or 15 km/h) you have to pass to activate it. Also note after driving in rear the function is also disabled until driving forward and pass 10/15 km/h.

Maybe your car hasn't got the auto start/stop altho it says so in the manual?

Do you have the button to turn it off? It's located next to the seat heat button for the passenger. If you have that, and it's still not working I would go to the vendor...

Good luck

Yes, it has it and the buttons there, it lights up if you deactivate it.
It never has shown the signal on the display either as it works or to indicate an fault.

I've booked it in at the dealers next week!

Just had car to dealers, they told me the car thinks the Stop start is off, so they've programmed it to be on again. (might have been turned off to when dealer fitted Ipod lead).

Anyway they then told me its still not working as the car needs to be left for over 8 hours to reboot the computer. IF that does not work I've to take it back again for more computer resetting. Seemed like a big fob off to me, surely if reset today it should work straight away and not need 8 hours to reboot!

Had car to another dealer. Fixed at last!

Seems the problem was that the original dealer had caused it when fitting the IPOD lead and rereprogramming the car.
They had reprogrammed it as having a standard battery. Seems the auto stop start cars have a heavier duty battery.

So the computer recognised my "normal" battery as not having enough charge to run the auto stop start. Now its programmed to have the fitted heavy duty battery and it Stops!

Glad I've found a good dealer Elvet BMW Durham and technician (Tim) who know whats going on.

How long does your vehicle remain 'stopped' when at traffic lights. Mine is cutting in after 1 minute. Garage tell me its OK. I doubt it.

Unhappy 318d Auto Start Stop Failure

I have also experienced this problem with my current E90 (Dec 2008 318d), but it seems to be an intermittent fault. I can drive 10 miles or 100 miles and the failure warning symbol appears. I took the car into my BMW dealer who looked at it and said there was nothing wrong - it was because other functions such as aircon are draining the battery and the computer automatically disables functions, such the auto start stop, to conserve the level of battery charge. Seems like there's a design issue, such as battery specification or something else, which BMW needs to address.
Strikes me that if all those fuel saving gizmos (Efficient Dynamics) drain your battery, it defeats the object. Never had any battery issues with my previous Bimmer (318i June 2006). Does my current model also have the alternator which is disabled half the time (which can't help)?

My start-stop function works very well, only if outside temperature is below 5oC it wont work, and if i keep car on handbreak it wont work too.

Car must be at neutral ( manual transmittion), clutch must be depressed and foot on break thats all

Seems like I did the same error when recoding the car to enable VIM .
Strange because I didn't touch any other option than those related to the DVD.

Do you know exactly which option they had to recode?
I will definitely have a look tonight and see if I can find a codeline related to the battery.

I've just bought my 320D 58plate today and i have the same problem. but i think mine is an issue with the battery charge being low since it was stuck at a dealers.
Do you think i need to put the battery on a charger, or do you think the battery with charge itself enough to use the stop/start function. just from driving around? i actually driven about 150miles and it's still not working.

Maybe you drive to agressive so turbos are to hot and ecu disengage start-stop, battery should charge enough unless its damaged or just dying already

stop start issue on 320d. Poor advice not helpful.

On a 2008 320d there is a button to switch it on and off. If you read your codes and see CC-ID397 it means that the memory has lost the understanding of when the gearbox is in the neutral position so it shuts down the facility. That will need resetting by a specialist. This often happens as a result of disconnecting the the battery.
When it is working the engine stops when stopped and will automatically restart when the clutch is depressed (without footbrake on!).
These forums are great but they do seem to attract people who want to contribute with guesswork, poor advice and often misleading information.
This can cause other problems and extra expense.

If you do not know then do not contribute. Wild guesses are not of use to anyone.
