There's an infamous post on here by efthreeoh who reached 400k miles on his n52 in 2020 and still going strong. Seems like his only major work was due to hitting deer. Other than that it's just maintenance and regular oil changes.

hope that helps ease any worries you had

Haha I have seen that thread. I'm at 180k and have done valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, oil filter housing gasket, water pump, thermostat and a few other known N52 issues. Wasn't sure if timing chain was one of those things.

Garage List
In a diesel world the M47/M57 to N47/N57 change came with timing chain placement and arrangement redesign, which resulted in reduced (chain) reliability of N57 (vs M57) and dramatic quality drop for N47 (vs M47).

The N47 is more prone to the chain stretch following by snapping due to the fact that it is 4 cylinder less balanced than 6 (N57).

Unlike diesel, the N52 was an great improvement in reliability over M54 across the board.

The other variable is probably different in NA/Western EU compared to some other places in the world - the fake parts industry.

While we argue to death about what oil to use in our engines, the consumer in eastern Europe can not even trust what is inside the container. The purity of diesel fuel is nothing like what we get even at the cheap pump here in US.

Many M57 engines gets at best generic oil there. the oil quality could be so bad, that it does impact even timing chain.

dialing back to US mainland.

When not maintained well/timely:
- N52 can eat its own belt, but not a timing chain
- M57 can chew its swirl flap but not a timing chain
- N57 is fun when it is in tri-turbo setup (not for NA)
- N47 ... I have one in F25 and I am not impressed.
