Question 2011 E92 335i (N55) Manual Gearbox Noise - Refurbushment?

Hello all,

My Manual 335i (N55) Gearbox makes a nasty grinding/clattering noise when running in gear. It is almost impossible to hear from the inside but if you have it up on a lift and put it in a high gear there is a pretty loud sound coming from the gearbox region. Interestingly, apart from the noise, it drives and feels absolutely fine. Bizarre. Video link of the noise here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zik53-ujJto

Took it to BMW for diagnosis and they have just said they hear the noise and it needs a new gearbox... classic

Can anyone recommend places that will do gearbox refurbishment in the UK? There are a number that come up when I google but I'd love to find out who in the UK is actually really good at this stuff.

Cheers for any help you can give me!

Manual gearboxes in BMWs are pretty bulletproof. Have you considered the noise could be the springs breaking up in the dual mass flywheel?

That's not a bad shout at all. The noise is not very continuous, so could be something like a spring just rattling around inside the casing. Every now and then when stationary the car seems to very slightly rock sideways - not massively but it does happen, I thought it was a slightly rough idle but it could be the flywheel...

Sounds like I really just need to get the box off and have a look inside at this point.

Does it go away if you push the clutch in? I'm pretty sure that's flywheel related.

Yes it does go away when you push the clutch in. Interestingly there is a very slight delay in it going away... maybe half a second. But yea it is only there when in gear.

I'd pull it off and check your dual mass and release bearing.

That delay is probably due the clutch delay valve.

With your window or door open do you hear any noises if you engage the clutch enough to move the car a little then disengage it really fast? Do you hear this noise at low speed when shifting gears too? I have got some noises as well. Still haven’t found the issue. Interested to know what you find.

Had a go at what you said, don't get any noises doing that or shifting. To me it didn't seem to be shifting related, apart from the slight delay in the noise going away when the clutch went in. Hard to tell. The box is coming off at the moment so I'll let you know what we find!
