a problem with brakes
my brakes are starting to squeak alot more often now. they started at around 500 miles, and i payed no attention to it since i figured it was due to brake in. now it happens all the time, the brakes still seem to catch i guess, although in my mind i'm starting to worry because they just dont seem right. im planning on bringing it in this week to check it out, my guess is warped rotors. can there potentially be any hazards with driving with warped rotors for a little while? i do not want my brakes to just stop working on the highway lol. if they are, would they replace them no charge? and in the worse case scenario, and i have to use emergency brakes, how do i do it lol. do i just jerk it up quick, or slowly?

In case you still need an answer: Which brakes are doing this? If it's the front brakes, and they actually are "warped" they believe me you WILL feel it because the car vibrates like hell when you hit the brakes. It happened to me in my last BMW and yes they were replaced for free. Also, if they are just squeeking, then you may want to wash out the wheels from all of the brake dust that builds up...

I'm pretty sure when he said 'washing out the wheels of brake dust' he meant 'washing out the wheels of brake dust'...
seriously, it helps, wash your wheels, see if it works Quote:

I'm gonna bet that you didn't bed in your brake pads. This is the procedure I use but most are similar. Reading up on how and why might give you some confidence in doing it too.
http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm I'm guessing it's not squeeling because the brakes are hot though. I know mine always make noise after I get them real hot (like at the track) and then go back to normal braking. I think it's due to the pad compound though and it goes away after a little bit.

Step 2 says: “Make a series of eight near-stops from 60 to about 10 mph. Do it HARD by pressing on the brakes firmly, just shy of locking the wheels or engaging ABS. “ The BMW manual tells you not to hit the brakes hard for the first few hundred miles??? I would follow the BMW manual before following the "How to Kill my brakes" manual by Dave Zeckhausen.

With warped rotors you feel pulsing in the pedal. The dealer will likely just give it a squirt of anti squeal. |
