Post How to get a 1500 discount anywhere on a brand new 335i

Hey Guys,

I wanted to share my experience of negotiating prices with dealers on getting my new 335i. Like you all, I have been waiting for this car for almost a year. I have been thinking about getting it but no discounts from dealers was an obstacle for my ego. So I have been checking the lease offers on bmwusa.com regularly, I realize that last offer they had would expire on Oct 31st. I decided to wait until Nov 1 to see what kind of incentives they would offer. Getting the car the first month it came out was not a good idea based on the notion of supply/demand. Everybody is going crazy making orders and the dealers are not interested in giving any discounts. I requested several quotes; nobody would give me anything better than just MSRP.

Ok, so I noticed something interesting, if you customize the car in the build your 335 section you get MSRP on everything. However if you go to the lease offers section, you read the fine print and then you configure the same car on build section you realize they have applied an incentive to the MSRP of about 1500.

So I went to the dealer and I told the guy I wanted to get the current 335i lease offer they had online, $499*/month for 36 months + tax (on a standard auto transmission). He went online picked a 335i + added automatic transmission, total 4600 + 695 + 1275 = 42,570.00. There was no way he could give me 499 a month + tax for 42570 unless he gets rid of the interest, so he had to decrease around 1550 from the price (final price 41020) and make some adjustments to the int rate on the lease. He came out to 499 a month, then I told him, cool, now get rid the automatic transmission and add sport package (current price => 41020 - 1275 + 1000 = 40745). From that point on I already had 1550 discount so I could have added more options if I wanted to. Long story short I got it alpine white, ZSP, black interior aluminum trim for almost MSRP. The trick, don’t not configure the car and the ask for discount; ask them to match the lease, from that point, once you have the discount secured add you options. I expect to get my baby in about 8 weeks. Any questions let me know, good luck! :rocks:

I got $1800 off just for asking... took a manager to approve, but they came back and said OK.

500 over invoice is WAY better, just make sure its ACTUALLY 500 over invoice... add it up on the confidential MY pricing sheet in the sticky on this forum, and compare to their numbers

I guess that was just a trick for locations were discounts are hard to get like Miami, FL.

Invoice is 37350, 500 over invoice is an excellent deal.

Sometimes dealers say its 500 over invoice, but they assume you dont know what invoice price is

Don't let others discount your discounting tip! I can always use another tactic to get a better deal...

In my case, I bought a 325i just as the 328's were coming out.. I wouldn't recommend a leftover if you are buying, but on a lease who cares? Now 330 vs 335 I might think differently b/c greater difference between the cars..

I totally agree, the website has nothing to do with it imho, it only keeps everyone honest as to what the list price is....i.e. no training, VPC fees, etc. I asked for $1700 off, and that's what I got. Sure, I wish I had asked for $2300, but I didn't. Actually, for fun, I asked for another $100 and they played it off, so I didn't push. What I find is there always has to be some reference point. The best one is that you have an offer from a competitor. It's like leapfrog--anybody could get $500 off, most can get $1000, but after that, it seems to take some shopping around. Yet, it wouldn't surprise me if someone who knew exactly what they were doing could score 1.5 to 2k right of the bat.

Anyone who drives away with a new 335 in the 37's is a super, terrific, wonderful negotiator. You're great.

I hate the invoice stuff, why can't people use a non-moving target, like list as stated on bmwusa.com and edmunds.com? Edmunds says $1700 off list is about 2k over invoice, yet my dealer showed me his screen and it's not that.....he had fees that edmunds doesn't show. $500 over what invoice? What does that translate to off of list, with zero hidden or add'l fees? How do we get out of this mode where we actually know what inovoice is for every dealership? Again, it's not edmunds.

Fees are just a B.S. way for them to lower their discount.
You shouldn't have to pay any additional over your negotiated price
except tax, title & registration IF, as was stated, you know exactly what you're doing.

What about doc fees?

I think all dealers charge a doc fee regardless it is US delivery or ED.
