Battery replacement for LCI e90 - recall?

Called Budd's BMW today to arrange first oil change. But before I could mention for them to also check the battery as it often flashes warning during winter or shuts off the radio when the car is off, Service advisor tells me that they will also change the battery under warranty. Apparently, around last week, BMW Canada made service advisement (probably not defined as a recall) to replace the battery.

I will get more information when I get it done next week and will advise you all.

Is this only for the 2011 models? So far I haven't had any problems with my 2009.

OK. Just got the battery replaced at Budd's under warranty. For those with electrical/ weak battery issues, see bulletin 61 81 11 0061380300. It calls for warranty replacement of E82 E88 E9X vehicle battery (new 90AH battery).

Excellent, thanks for the info!!!

Do you know if they updated the DME/ECU at the same time?

I just went back and checked my paperwork from this service.

It doesn't specify the bulletin, but it does have the part number for an "Exide 90AH battery"

I have a 2009 328i and had the same issue. Took BMW TnC 3 visits, one right after another and finally on the 4th time after arguing with the service manager, they reluctantly replaced the battery and i have not experienced any issues since.

Not sure if i have the new battery though.

Schnell, not sure what is the DME/ECU upgrade, but if you are referring to software upgrade, service advisor commented that they would also check and reprogram the car.

Word of advice is at anytime you are not satisfied with a repair, you can always request to escalate the issue to a PUMA.

Some interesting battery info.

We did an article on BMW batteries in Issue 2 of the magazine. Winter can be hard on batteries with the new high tech cars. Check it out there is some good info there.

I had to do a PUMA on the very first day we got the '11 335xi......cracked intake piece or something. Since no parts were available, they siliconed the bitch and she was fine. It will get fixed along with the battery/programming in a month!

what year e90 is the recall for? I had a low battery voltage issue before, car died and triggered lights/alerts and all dealer did was charge battery and didn't replace it. This was a month ago... now the 323i is out of warranty.

Took my car in last week to troubleshoot a weird problem I was having with USB audio (playing MP3's from memory key) and the service dept. informed me that there was "an upgrade" available for my battery and that they would replace it under warranty for me when I dropped the car off to have them look at my issue with the stereo. I couldn't get a real good answer from them as to weather or not they did a software upgrade. The tech I spoke to said they would have had to if they replaced the battery but couldn't provide any paperwork to show that it was done. I'm thinking there was some kind of upgrade because the icon on the dash has changed for the DSC and my audio problems are gone. Maybe the battery did play some kind of role in it! Either way problem fixed *knock on wood*

Sorry if some consider this thread jacking but I just thought I'd share my experience with the "Battery replacement for LCI e90"

Just had a call earlier today and booked an appointment for the recall. As far as I know it actually is a faulty battery, and not an 'upgrade.' Wondering what the problem is with our current ones? Car is a 2010 323i. TIA.

Hi guys, my car went in for service recently (brake oil change) and they also changed the battery. My car is a 2009 E90 335i and they just plain changed the battery. On the bill, it says "Battery replaced for 90AH model, reprogram entire car". part number : 61-21-7-586-962 Exide Battery 90AH. Same bulletin number mentioned above.

I didn't experience anything that could lead me to believe the battery was faulty.

BTW, they also changed my HPFP (I was still on the original and it was still working fine as well).

My service advisor told me that the car requires a re-programming to incorporate the increased battery size (70amp to 90amp), may throw codes without the update.

It's a wide recall that takes 3 hrs or so - mainly for the reprogramming. I went in to Budds to get the Dinan Stage 1 software which takes an hour but it needed the battery reprogramming to be done first. Will need to call DimSum to have my car recoded too.
