Need help from BMS Power Box owners!
Hello everybody,
A while ago I bought a secondhand PBX from ebay, and it came without the wiring harness. Of course I thought I could buy this harness straight from Burger Motorsports, but they were very rude and refused to sell me one. I also asked for help to make my own wire, but they let me down once again. So now I am asking for help from you guys, I am sure this community would not only think about dollars and the maximum profit like BM does. What I need is a picture of the connector from inside so i could build my own cable. I have done a bit of a research and realized the connector itself is just a regular 25-pin D-Sub connector. There are two screws which need to be disconnected from the D25 plug in order to see inside. The wires are colour coded to each pin, and this is what I need to know. Here is a picture of the PBX + connector for reference. I would be extremely grateful for this information, huge thanks in advance! This is my baby I need this box for: Greetings from Finland and thanks in advance once again! |

You are in luck. I have a BMS PBX that I tried some years ago sitting in a draw. So I quickly grabbed it, opened it up and took some reference pics, but used my multimeter to identify the pins and wires. This is what I have:
Pins 1-13 (bottom row) 1: White M 5: Yellow M 6: Yellow F 7: Grey F 8: Blue M 9: Orange F 12: Red F 13: Black F Pins 14-25 (top row) 14: White F 18: Grey M 20: Blue F 21: Orange M 24: Red M 25: Black M M = Male F = Female I hope that this helps. Disclaimer: I can't be held responsible for any problems that the BMS PBX could possibly cause. The wiring and pins orientation simply based on my BMS PBX as I got it. If I am doing wrong by showing/revealing these wiring and pins orientation, then the manufacturer of this product needs to consider better public relations as per the OP. In the spirit of helping fellow BMW pilots, I will always help where I can. Last edited by Three_thirty_I; 03-21-2016 at 10:38 AM.. |

Yes this is, could be helpful for many others aswell. I am mainly interested about the throttle mapping, I am aware of that the power output will not be improved dramatically. However, I am interested about the difference it makes compaired to USDM model, as the European model 330 has the same 190kw power rating, but much better even-lenght header, intake and only 2 cats. I dropped a K&N filter aswell, and that already made a difference I could notice.

Thanks guys.
I also agree regarding a good software tune over this, but there are people that seem to be happy with this, so worth trying if you have it. |

Yep, I didn't like it. It doesn't remove the throttle lag, and by making the throttle more sensitive it only made matters worse for me the higher the Map setting was (1-3 or 4-6). So after a few months had it removed. And as for the claimed "extra power", meh...

The throttle settings are way to jumpy past 3 imo. But at 2 I found it Is quite good. Great for heel and toe. Of course an AA tune is superior overall, but still think the throttle was near perfect with the bms.
But my AA tune will soon be obsolete too! |

It may be the case with the 328i and 528i models that were known to have really laggy unresponsive throttle - the 330i wasn't quite as bad from what I gather from reading various threads etc. So for me it seemed to cause more problems. For town driving I did find that Map 2 was nice most of the time, but the moment I wanted to do some hard runs through the revs it made my gear changes rather jerky which was never the case with the stock throttle. I ended up concluding that for me, the stock throttle feel was still optimum, especially with the permanent degree of lag that is present. If it works for a person and car, great, but it won't be as good as a proper tune at the end of the day.

I also like the fact that it makes my engine run richer because I got a feeling it runs a bit lean with the better K&N filter. Advancing ignition should also do something as I use only premium fuel (Shell V-power 99oct.). But like I said it is worth of trying and I will dyno it eventually to see is there any difference versus stock.

I also have the box,for a stock motor,it works, its more than just pushing the pedal further. I find that ttunesmore valuable it you have the proper mods. A custom tune is the only way to go,I know I may receive slack from this, but think about it if you sent it out for a off the shelf tune, your gains are minimal. But you want reach your full potential unless.of course you keep sending in for upgrades. Believe me when I tell ya I have a 3 stage,kn.drop in,bms box,and ran 5 gal of e85, and she halls ass. No tune till I do a full bolt on,then a tune can be full effect of your hardware. Hope thaw helps and good luck
