Powdercoating in the SFV or LA area
I'm looking for a reputable shop to powdercoat my wheels in the San Fernando Valley or LA area. Anyone know of a shop that does good work for a good price? I've heard of $50 per corner, but I'd rather have a quality job than a cheap price.
I'd rather not do the job myself, I'm just looking for someone local who knows what they're doing. I know Platinum Motorsport will do it, but I'd rather not deal with them, so I'm open to any other suggestions. Let me know guys...I wanna matte my wheels!

what do you mean when you say each corner? isnt that just each wheel?
btw I just called them and they charge $640 total for all 4 wheels. it was like 90 to powdercoat each and about 65 to chemically strip them.

That is so ridiculous. I wouldn't pay more than $300 to powdercoat all 4 wheels. There's several good places outside of the SFV that do excellent jobs for very good prices.

Hi fellow BMW owners,
Please remember when selecting a powder coating service provider, you are paying for much more than just putting powder on wheels. Almost every day, we hear of one horror story or another. I have decided that I am going to start publishing the stories that come walking through our door... Yesterday, a woman came into our facility and told us of her experience with a coating facility. She had decided to get her aluminum patio furniture refinished last fall. She went through the entire process, and received her furniture with a nice, brand new finish. In the winter, her son came home to visit from college. He had a gathering at their home, and when the guests sat in the patio chairs, the chairs crumpled under their weight. Scott and I knew immediately what had happened. These aluminum chairs were exposed to too high a temperature, either during the curing process, or their ignorant attempt to burn off the existing coating before re-powder coating, which damaged the molecular properties of the metal. Once aluminum is exposed to temperatures exceeding 600F, it softens and weakens, and the results are catastrophic. Now, this woman's $4000.00 set of Tropitone patio furniture is junk. The powder coating facility absolevd itself of any responsibility, citing the amoutn of time from accepting the furniture to when the damage occured (about 4 months). She had to go through her own homeowners insurance company to be recompensed. Now, imagine that this was not patio furniture. Let's imagine for a second that this is your car wheels. Are you willing to put your life into the hands of your powder coating facility? A facility that may not know exactly what they are doing and have no track record of satisfied clients? Facilities pop up every day, and on every corner. There are even facilities popping up illegally in neighborhoods with "coaters" using their conventional ovens to coat your parts. Of course they can do it cheap! They do not have the AQMD and EPA certs required by law to be practicing business. They dont have a building to pay rent on for overhead. They do not comply with business laws, or pay the governments to be in business. These are SHADY CHARACTERS, and people that should not be entrusted with your parts, not to mention performance car wheels! We have had to write letters on more than one occasion for small claims courts on automotive and motorcycle wheels, where a client's parts were damaged when the coating facility they chose attempted to sandblast the existing powder coating off of their parts. All parts with powder coating currently on them MUST be chemically stripped (if aluminum) or burned off (if steel) prior to a re-application of powder coating. If your coating facility is unwilling to do this, and shows careless concern for your parts by cutting corners to coat your part, ask yourself if that is really what you want for your part. This is an outside process, and it costs us $65.00 per wheel to get it done. If you want to same some money, bring us the wheels already chemically stripped. We dont mind; we dont make money on the deal anyway and it saves us a trip to Anaheim. Investigate your powder coating facility. Take a TOUR of the facility. Are they CLEAN? Are they COMPLIANT? What is their employee turnover like? What are their employee training methods like? Are they constantly training new employees, resulting in inconsistent quality? Does management personnel answer all of your questions thoroughly and to your satisfaction? Is their quality known and recognized, and is it consistent? When you are looking for "the cheap guy", keep these tips in mind. They may save your life, or at least, your patio furniture! Sandee Andrews Andrews Powder Coating Inc. |

Sandee is good people!! (as long as you can get by the whole purple thing ) While it was a little more for me to get my motorcycle wheels done, they came out great. I had all kinds of questions before/during/after and never had an issue with understanding the answers.
Many of you may be starting with relatively new rims. Mine were flaking like crazy, all the chrome was coming off. It took a bit of extra time to get them chemically cleaned, but they came out so smooth. The guy working my bike was very concerned about CORRECTLY coating the wheels, so that he didn't have to spend time scraping powder out of places that shouldn't have it. Sandee already knew and understood that necessity, and I didn't have an issue. I've observed some rims that looked pretty nice, but I could see powder in the bearing cups. Don't know how much trouble it is to remove powder from the racings, nor if the interaction of the grease and stress would tend to get particulates into the bearings, but I know I didn't want that with my rims. I haven't posted any pics yet for Sandee because I wanted to have her do some more work on the rest of the bike but I need to get some more moonlighting in before I show up. I'll see if I can snap off some soon. . . |
